I am quite the novice when setting up wireless. We decided to take a job where we need to get wireless in a long 3 story building (old gigantic house). We are planning on using 4 unifi uap-lr access points. I like the idea of the auto handoff between access points (I think that is what they do). As a general rule, do you set them all on the same channel or try and avoid interference be using different channels (of the three main ones) to reduce interference?

To enable the true "zero handoff" feature that Ubiquiti introduced with the v3 controller....you need them to all be on the same channel. However...been reading some "doesn't work well" stories with the ZH feature.

I've had better success with non-LR models.
For doing multiple APs in office buildings...I've just spread them across channels 1, 6, 11.

We did the job today. It was a giant 3 story house built in the first part of the century(last century). They had restrictions about running cable, meaning cabling was not an option.

We used 3 of the radio linked together with PowerLine ethernet adapters. We just set them all on different channels with the same ssid. We decided against using the zero handoff feature, based on our tests and on your suggestion. Strong signal, not weaker than -60 dbm in the weakest areas. Time will tell if they have issues, but it seemed solid as a rock.

Ironic to see this thread today.

I've had luck with the ZH and LR models in a nursing home in the past.

But anyhow, going to do a client's home in a day or two. Figured I'd just bring a bunch out with me (I keep them stocked) and see what works best.
7000 sq/ft house, 3 stories tall, and concrete/marble floors and walls. This is going to be a fun one.

// wish I had the money for a house like that
