trouble with search service

I'm trying to learn how the search service works on Windows Server 2008.

Windows Server is installed in a Oracle Virtualbox vm on my desktop computer. VM is in bridged mode so it's on the same network as the host computer and laptops on the network.

It's Windows Server 2008 Standard edition with no roles enabled except the file services role and the search service.

I shared a folder from from C:\ on the server...ie....C:\ShareTest\
This folder shows up fine in Network Places from a laptop and I can add/remove files from it, so I know it's shared properly.

I went into indexing options in control panel on the server and made sure the shared folder is indexed, and it's showing up in the index.

I go to the start button on my Windows 7 laptop and search "2008 book" which is a file inside the ShareTest folder and nothing comes up. I'll do a search for "ShareTest" and nothing comes up.

I've also got a separate volume set apart and shared as drive "e" on the server and it's empty except for one file in it. The "e" drive is also indexed and when I search for that one file in it, nothing comes up.

Does anything jump out that I may be missing?

Is this worth pursuing and implementing on customer's servers? From what I've gathered from other forums, the search service generally doesn't work well.
