Here's what I want:

To transfer my 1and1 domain to GoDaddy because I keep
having problems with 1and1.

Here's what I've done:

I unlocked my 1and1 domain, then I purchased it using
GoDaddy.

Problem:

I don't see my domain listed in my GoDaddy domain manager as a pending
domain transfer. The only place I see it is in the recent orders section.
Edit: It's finally showing

GoDaddy sent an email to this 1and1 email address: proxy2185977@1and1-private-registration.com
A request for approval was sent to this address.
Is this email supposed to be the administrator of the 1and1 domain account?
(me)??? 'cause if so, my contact info is correct and I have not received an email.

I've emailed 1and1 this question, but they take way too long to respond.
I also emailed GoDaddy asking why I don't see my domain listed as a pending transfer

Downtime is not cool

I don't believe you can transfer a domain if it's privately registered. You'll need the registered email address to be your own. The problem when you change the address is that you'll need to wait for a long period of time before you can transfer the domain.

I think the period is either 30 or 60 days.

The period is 60 days. I bought the domain months ago.
Are you saying I need to change an email address and THEN wait 60 days?
I haven't found one place where I can change the registered email address proxy2185977@1and1-private-registration.com
There's only 1 email listed on my account and it's mine.

From GoDaddy:

Dear XXX XXX,

To complete your recently requested transfer, we must receive approval of the administrative contact currently associated with the domain name(s) below, which we have determined to be proxy2185977@1and1-private-registration.com. A request for approval has been sent to that address. If you believe the email address is not correct, you must visit your current registrar and have it updated.

Domain name(s) associated with this transfer:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx.COM

that email address will forward to the email address on record for your account. You have the domain info marked as private (which is a free feature of 1&1)

Wait until you hear from 1&1, but remember, transfering domains isn't instant. Registrars make it as annoying as possible.

You are doing everything just fine so far.

Thanks for the heads up, I am waiting until everything is about to renew and then transfer to Go Daddy.
I guess I had better get everything checked out and lined up to make it a lot easier.

I called customer service and holy crap is it ever better than email
I only waited for about 4 minutes and the guy understood my problem and told
me that I need to do this:

Since I changed my domain's DNS settings to work with Google Apps
I will have to wait up to 1-2 days for the domain to be ready.

*I made the mistake of pointing my primary domain to Google's email servers
- should have done it to the sub-domain I created to verify my ownership of my domain
This is why I wanted to transfer my domain, because I didn't know my domain
had to be listed as ready for me to change the DNS settings back to my web server's name server?

After it's ready, I have to select my domain and choose
- Contact -> Private/Public Registration and change my account from
Private to Public.

Then I should just have to give GoDaddy an authorization code
that I get by selecting my domain name and clicking Info.

He said I will not have to wait 60 days for the transfer, that the transfer
will happen right away.

Your domain contact details will be made public and listed in WHOIS.
To make changes to your contact details, click on OK to return to
the overview page. Select the domain from the table and click on
Contact to reach the edit page.

From GoDaddy:

Re: Transfer of XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx.COM

Dear GoDaddy.com, Inc. Customer,

GoDaddy.com, Inc. received a request on 11/22/2010 for us to become the new registrar of record.

You have received this message because you are listed as the Registered Name Holder or Administrative contact for this domain
name in the WHOIS database. If you are not the Account Holder, or you are transferring the domain to a new owner, please
forward this email to the appropriate Account Holder so that they may complete the transfer process.

IMPORTANT: If the steps below are not completed, the domain name(s) listed above will NOT be transferred to us.
To proceed with the transfer, log in and follow these instructions.

In the process of authorizing this transfer, you will be prompted to provide the Transaction ID and Security Code:

Transaction ID: xxxxxxxxxx
Security Code: xxxxxxxxxxxx

Once a transfer takes place, you will not be able to transfer to another registrar for 60 days, apart from a transfer back to the original
registrar, in cases where both registrars so agree or where a decision in the dispute resolution process so directs.

If you DO NOT WANT the transfer to proceed, then please don't respond to this message.

If you have any questions about this process, contact us by email at support@godaddy.com, or by phone at (480) 505-8877.

Regards,
GoDaddy.com, Inc.

If you DO NOT WANT the transfer to proceed, then please don't respond to this message.
From the look of it, you shall expect your domain to be transferred soon. I am not a big fan of godaddy though, namecheap seems to be a better choise.

Update: my domain finally switched over to GoDaddy after several days
of waiting. I updated the nameservers with my hoster's and am waiting for
that to complete :)

Update: I've noticed that my web site loads quite a bit faster with GoDaddy
as my registrar than when I used 1 and 1. Must be faster DNS servers?
