Trouble Repairing Win 7 SP1

Hey All,

I'm working on a machine thats giving me lots of trouble.

It was brought in to the shop because it fails on installing windows updates. I've used the MS window update repair tools with no success.

I performed virus and malware checks (all clean), had d7 repair persmissions, etc

So, when trying to run SFC it goes through the 'found bad files but couldnt repair them all... etc" I usually had sucess on running it multiple times on other machines but this one wont budge and shows a couple hundred repair fails in the cbs log.

The machine is Win 7 Pro 64 with SP1, it was originally installed with the retail version then eventually upgraded to SP1. When this option failed i tried to do it via the dvd but it doesnt have the service pack.

Using the NON SP1 disc the repair sfc states another repair is pending and that i need to restart. Restarting never seems to help.

If I try to do an inplace install repair i get the message about the disc being an older version than what currently installed.

My next thought was OK so i'll just slipstream one. Well after some research this isnt an option, for a inplace repair at least.

Note - Sys restore point were cleaned by D7

So, I'm not sure where to go with this or how to proceed, any suggestions?

Backup files and settings,

then do a reinstall and start again, you could try running combo fix first, just google combo fix, it is free

One better I think is "Windows Repair AIO by Tweaking.com". Thou D7 can get a lot of it; I still run this one sometimes on bad systems and its fully automated too. I would give it a shot if I were you.

Kevin, get with the times! D7's repair page is fully automated now, and if you can name ONE THING that this *other* app does that D7 doesn't, I'll add it...

EDIT: in fact I recently finally downloaded that app to check it out, I don't see anything it does that D7 doesn't -- seems to do a LOT less -- but correct me if I'm wrong...

Sorry Nick =) And I'm probably your #1 fan too. I've been lazy at trying your auto mode for Window Repair and been used to using the Windows Repair AIO. I'd be glad to get rid of that tool as long as D7 does the same. So are you saying it does everything in that list under Repair Options under the Start Repairs tab? If I remember right; the only reason I was using the other tool is because it was fully automated and didn't bother me at all and yours I was getting prompted when the WMI/WBEM/DCOM was done. But this was before you put in Auto Mode. I'll give a try on the next computer I work on for sure tho.

I'll also do a comparison and get back to you about it. I would love to do it all in D7. We are trying to make the "Ultimate Technician Repair Tool", right? =) (Well You I mean =))

I don't know if I asked this one or if someone else has... But is it possible to add to Pre-Removal section under Malware Removal Section? I run msconfig on every machine before the Malware Removal is started for example.

I did run DataMigrate twice today and it was flawless. Thank You! I also tried the Full Auto Mode and thought it stalled a few times on me during a session. But I was in a rush so I'm not counting this session. I'll give another try on the next one when I'm not in a hurry. I'm sure it works great. Well talk to you later my friend.

EDIT: OOPS! Just realized this wasn't the D7 Thread. Sorry!

I've removed a lot of prompts from the repair page when run in the new auto mode.

Yes full auto mode will stall if (especially combofix) was run on malware page and something reboots the pc - you just need to click stop/start to get it going again. working on a fix...

msconfig? really?

Really I do... I try to reduce startup items before starting Malware Removal. It reduces the amount of items to go thru in MalwareScan and Autoruns.
