Travel routers?

I'm pretty sure he's not looking for a LTE hotspot, but for a router that can use either wired or wifi on the WAN side while providing a private wifi network.
Yes, this is exactly what I need. The cruise sells internet, but charge per device. I want to get a travel router to share my one device with my laptop and the kids stuff and not be charged for multiple devices.

Couldn't you just plug a standard router in to an ethernet jack (if available) ?
They are usually only available in business centers on the ship.

Could you not use a wifi router with a uap to create your own wifi network thus only being changed for the 1 device

I just finished a cruise on Celebrity. AT&T cell service is available (for a fee, of course) on some of the Celebrity ships, but not all of them. Our cruise package included unlimited internet which worked well. No ethernet port in the cabin, just wireless access. There was a 1 device limit, but you could switch between multiple devices (i.e.: only 1 device could access the internet at a time). Just did email and Facebook and stuff like that. Did not try anything like a remote session.

But, I could not establish a connection to a VPN server using Private Internet Access. Not sure if this is deliberate or not. Obviously, YMMV depending on which cruise line / ship you're on.

I use an Apple AirPort Express for this. We travel around to trade shows and it’s the same deal: pay for 1 device. Out provlem is our equipment needs to be able to see each other and their provided network equipment either does not do this or does so at an extreme cost.

Airport will connect to their network and provide a private network both WiFi and Ethernet for your devices.

Hi, When not near to land (normally days at sea) do not connect to the Ships Network.

Message I received from 3 and O2 "It looks like you're on a ship network. While on board, it'll cost up to £3.00/min to call, £1.25/min to receive a call, 50p to send SMS & £6.00/MB to use web & email."

Always turn your phone off at night and turn off mobile data when not near to land or not connected to a mobile phone company.

Have a good cruise.
