OK - we are stumped. We have a Toshiba Satellite L505-GS6000 which we had to replace the HDD.

Installed windows 7 no problems. Loaded all drivers, etc. Everything good except it does not recognize the USB ports. Put in flash drives and USB mouses. No lite on them.

Tried to load Knoppix, Edbuntu, Linux and Puppy Linux - they start to load then stop.

Replaced the memory modules - no difference.

Checked BIOS - nothing in it to disable USB ports. Device Manager does not list anything for Universal Serial Bus Controllers. That kind of makes us think of a possible failure of the Southgate chip.

Any thoughts??????

Thanks - three stumped techs.

None of the USB ports work?
Did you try to install the USB drivers via CD?

I would start suspecting a board issue also. I have had laptops come in and have all kinds of usb issues that turned out to be a usb port that is shorted out. Most of the time this comes from customers trying to fit a square into a round hole kind of approach. Need to inspect the MB.

If your lucky on that model it may have a seperate little daughter board for the usb ports.
