Good afternoon!
I have a customer who showed up with a Toshiba Satellite S70-B-110 with the broken graphics chip. Customer said that a thermal paste change was been made very recently in another store.

When disassembly we noticed that the graphics chip also had folder and we are suspicious that it should be thermopad. Can anyone confirm the graphics chip takes thermopad or paste?

We are reballing a new chip and we want to make sure it does not happen again.

Thanks and have a nice week;)

I've seen instances where people (I won't use the word tech's) have used copper pennies in place of shims in order to get the job(?) done and out the door.

Yeah, I don't think very much of those thermal pads either. I would also push for thermal paste instead (if possible.)

My preference is for paste as well. However I've seen OEM repair kits for both Sony and Toshiba which shipped with pads. Pre-shaped for each chip. I've also seen posts where people advocated using copper sheet shims for better heat mitigation.

From the factory most newer Toshiba units I have seen use paste if it uses a dual pipe (or similar) design. If the two copper plates are at the same height and the chips have the same height, paste is King

However, some models require pads, and there are different thickness of pads from .5mm up to 3mm. Shims are good, but do carry a risk that if the paste degrades and the shim becomes loose, it could short circuit components. Rare, but worth considering.

Most laptop GPU's are garbage anyways and the effort to find genuine replacement can be hard plus very labor intensive.

I've heard the copper shim idea before as well, but never really had a repair where I would have used them. I was all set to write a post asking if anyone had a source for shims as I've never run across them in searching all these years - then I did a quick search for the heck of it - and found several sources - I guess they are easy to find after all! Makes me want to order a small assortment just for the heck of it - haha.
