Customer brought me this laptop to fix, because the touch screen isn't working anymore from being dropped. He can still use the machine fine with a mouse, but not the touch part. I've replaced screens before on a laptop, but not a touch screen one. Any advice and where could I find the part? I did some research and it sounds like the digitizer needs replaced. Customer thinks it's going to cost a lot for the part and wanted to know if possible to just install a normal screen?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have the same question. I've actually turned away touchscreen laptops for now. Curious of the added difficulty.

I've had two Acer touchscreens in and unfortunately I was unable to find any replacement digitizers -- they just weren't available. The only carrier was Acer itself and they wouldn't sell the part. We ended up having the ship the units directly to Acer's repair department and have them perform it.

I would say check eBay, but with my experience doing cell phone digitizers I know its near impossible to remove one and not damage it if it's held on with adhesive so finding a "parted out" digi is unlikely. China isn't really pushing out laptop digitizers either because the demand just simply isn't great enough since most every model uses a different size/style.

Replacing the digitizer isn't that hard.

There are Acer partners that will sell the digitizer, only problem is it usually comes as a head assembly, and that unit is typically as much as a new computer.

Same issue as the ones with somewhat integrated webcams (Lucom screens).

yeah, I just did some shopping for the toshiba touchscreen I turned down, price range $177-200, not many around here would pay that for just the part let alone the labor, might as well be a laptop mobo, guess it will take time for the price to come down.

$177-$200 is actually not too bad. Most quotes I've gotten from either Acer or Dell were in the $375-$500 range.

they were ebay and some other random site, it was enough to put the nail in the coffin for me doing them.:o

i have a asus laptop with a cracked touch screen.

I only worked on regular cracked lcd screens, but not touchscreens. I was planning to order the entire lcd + digitzer assembly and just replace it quickly.

I will see if I can dissemble it and take pictures if anyone needs a guide in the future.
