toshiba laptop not booting vista

Basically, when I turn the laptop on, it starts to load vista, and then you just see a black screen with an arrow. And nothing else happens. The only way to power it down is to hold the power button.

I'm thinking about taking the hard drive out and pulling the data off of it (which I need a little advice on how to go about this) and reformatting it.

But I'm wondering if there is a simpler solution? Would the Vista recovery disk help at all?

THANKS :]

yes, there's a simpler solution. We've discussed this issue several times and there's good documentation. Try this

I should include the fact that the CD drive isn't working therefore I cannot use a repair/recovery disk. I've tried the Startup Repair and it sends me to the "kSOD" as well. I've done a lot of searching in the past day and not much is turning up. Just doing a repair installation or a recovery seems to be the only answer.

I would like to know if I am missing something. If not, I am going to need to take the drive out of the laptop and pull the data off of it and do a clean install. But how would I do this? I'm still a bit of a beginner on the hardware side of things. What kind of cable(s) would I need to pull this off?

-Thanks,

Those "little" details are the key to solve the problem. Why don't get a CD drive that is working then? Then use a CD to remove the update that is causing this typical problem.

I do plan on getting one later. But right now I want to learn how to pull the data off of a hard drive for future reference. Could I get some advice please?

The type of disk drive I am working with is a Toshiba Disk Drive MK2035GSS.

Would this work with the above drive?:

No, the Toshiba is a SATA drive and the enclosure is for IDE drives. You need a USB to IDE and SATA adapter.

Can you bring up the task manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del?

Can you boot from USB?

Can you boot from safe mode?

I can boot from USB.

It doesn't give me the option to boot in safe mode.

I can't bring up the task manager at all.

I'm confused, first you said that you want to repair the update problem, then you said that you want to extract the data.

The solution is to boot it from a CD but you said the drive is not working then you said that the computer doesn't recognize the external CD drive

Ok. Let me break this down for you. I'm trying to learn how to fix it both ways for future reference. I'd like to be able to solve it via CD but I'd also would like to learn how to back up data off of a internal SATA/IDE hard drive in case of an emergency. I connected my external CD drive. The computer can't recognize it. The internal CD drive isn't working properly. What can't you figure out buddy?

P.S. So this would be a more appropriate solution to pulling data off an IDE and/or SATA drive, correct?

My bad. For some reason. The external disk drive isn't working either. Damn. Looks like I am going to have to pull the data off and buy a new disk drive later.

I'm confused too, I didn't see where he/she want to repair an update problem?

If a bad update is causing the problem you can uninstall updates without windows running but you have to boot from an internal or external CD drive.

If you can boot from USB then you should be able to boot from an external USB to CD drive

Here are a couple of links to USB to IDE and SATA adapters:

I don't recall saying anything about an update problem, because I'm not sure what is causing it. Anyways, looking at the products you pointed out, what is supposed to connect to the SATA side? I'm looking at the SATA drive right now and it definitely wouldn't fit the adapter pictured. It seems like I would need some sort of ribbon cable. I don't see it pictured in either of the products. Am I missing something? Does the power cable connect to one section of the drive and the SATA adapter to the other?

Why can't people just be helpful anymore? The BIOS on this laptop doesn't give you an option to boot from the external cd drive.

Slave the drive. here
