Torrent do I understand it right?

Ok I have always stayed away from P2P. I don't like the security risks involved. They scare me and I have never even bothered checking into them. I know you run the same risks downloading any software but downloading through P2P just seems like more of a risk. I can count virus/spyware/adware that I have gotten on one hand because I am so carful.

Now I am seeing Torrent all over the place. Is this a P2P? Should I get over it and start accepting P2P programs? There are a lot of things I won’t to download that requires me to have Torrent on them. What extra precautions’ should I take when using Torrents?

Any other information you can give me about Torrents would be of help.

I also don't wont others to download from me. Is this a problem or can I simply turn it off/on?

Edit: The only Virus I have had was in 1991 I got the Michelangelo Virus. I loved it though as it made me lots of money doing data recovery from the town I lived in. It seemed like everyone was infected with this. I have had a couple of sypware attacts though.

With most Torrent programs you can make it were no one can download from you. As for how to go about it: I download and test everything I download inside a virtual machine for about a week or two before it comes out.

The vertual machine is not a bad idea.

I am using this idea to a point. I am going to use one of my old computers that is collecting dust. Do a ghost copy of its OS install and then I can check the files from this. This way if its got a virus or other bad programm I can simply deleate from this computer and I have a very fast backup of it just in case.

OK so far I like it. I am triing to download ISO images of Windows OS's to use in repair. I have gotten a few but lots more to go.

Where do you all go for these downloads?

I would agree if I was using for installing on any and every system. I am not doing this I am using them for REPAIR work. If they don't have it already on their system I will not install it on their computer.

I do not and will not support installing illegal software. I don't even do this with 98.

There is numberless discussions on this forum about others having xp 9-1 and other programs which ARE not legal. Now I am not a law person but I do believe I have a right to keep copy's of OS's if I am not using for illegal purpose.

If you go into 99.9% of repair places you will see copies of software they do not own. If they are not illegally installing them then they are fine. The problem is I can take you into some of these that sell systems with illegal keys and this is a BIG PROBLEM.

They no longer sell the OS's I need and the ones I do I also own a computer with the keys on them. So I do own the right to get these copies.

Gunslinger isn't arguing what you're doing just the talking about it on here. No need to get tetchy. Please don't be so laissez-faire with a community you've just joined. The higher the number of references to illegal activity there are on this board the more likely notice will be taken.

As to the legality of having copies of CDs for repair purposes it's NOT legal in the US and is questionable in Europe, however, if you are a professional, MS (especially) pretends not to notice.

The problem with forums is no one can see your expressions, body action and so forth. If they could they would know I wasn't mad or even upset with his comment.

I was defending my action to a point. Not in an argumentive type of defense though. I was simply trying to explain my intention incase I came across wrong. It looks as though I have came across wrong again... I am sure this will happen again and again not just with me but with other forum users.

When you can’t tell posters intentions it’s easy to take them for meaning something else. I have done this too others as well so I take no offence to such an accusations as its easy to do.

Now if I read back through the posts I can see where someone might take it wrong but I don't feel I could have worded any different and stand behind what I wrote.

although there are alot of asshats out there that do find it funny to put virus's and trojens inside downloads from P2P file shairing networks there are also numerouse ways to combat that. most sites have a comments section for each torrent where you can go to read what others have thought and found about the download.

most P2P communities regard leeching (the act of downloading without letting others download from you or letting others download very little) as disshonourable and is fround upon allthough if it is of a big enough consrin to you you can control how much you are uploading and how many people can download off you at any one time.

allthough P2P can be used illegaly it is also used in many ways legaly such as a way of downloading patches for games or software you have purchased and even freeware and slackware applications and should not set off the type of red flags in peoples minds that it does. also as another poster has said there are programs that can hide your IP adress in thesenetworks such as peerguardian.

P2P file shairing is as safe as you want it to be. if you are carefull it shouldnt be unsafe.

risking another small post (i am crossing my fingers that no red flags are leading jack bauer to my front door).

there are numerous advantages to using the .torrent system including better tweaking capabilities, better search options and also a community of sorts that as a previous poster explained, serve as a filter against viruses and misleading file downloads. There is an abundance of free (open source and freeware) software to be found and there is even a tracker dedicated to that very genre (www.legaldownloads.com) there are also software startups that utilize the .torrent site to advertise their software e.g CNA and wiseregistrycleaner.

I guess that where I live there is a more relaxed attitude towards p2p in general so that just chatting about it is no big deal yet I have my doubts if the situation in the USA is one of terror and fear while anti-p2p organizations oppress and suppress the truth.
