As a side note I keep hearing how Win 8 is faster. This is not true (even though I haven't performed any objective testing, and cannot quote any objective studies to back up what I say). I don't care what geekbench says, (I'm still going to believe my anecdotal impressions) Win 7 still feels much snappier.

Numbers can say a lot of things. When I can't feel any difference in speed of starting programs, the file system or doing routine tasks than how exactly does this "technical" speed advantage help me? Also since the UI is completely borked its going to hinder most people in getting every day things done anyway. Will Windows 8 render a video in 2 mins that takes Windows 7 5 mins to do? I doubt it, but if you can show me something like that I'll take notice.
Its not all about geekbench scores anymore than its all about specs when it comes to a computer. Please show me some real world, meaningful speed differences.

I notice almost no difference with the same system specs. If anything Win 7 is faster.

Not to stir the pot but:
As far as Vista is concerned, it was an unfinished product. It was unrefined and it was rushed out the door so M$ wouldn't be caught with its pants down. OSX had a new toy out and M$ couldn't be without theirs.
Having said that, with the proper amount of memory, windows vista will run just fine. I've had no major issues with it.
As far as windows 8 is concerned, I use it and I like it. I think it's a good product. Is it my favorite windows build? No. Do I think it will get shuffled out the door like Vista did? No. Windows 8 feels more "complete".
It seems to run as good, if not better compared to windows 7 on the same hardware. But at least IMO it runs as good.

I don't see why that would be too much to ask. They could have it as an option on first boot as well "We notice your device is not touch screen enabled, would you like to boot into classic mode instead?" This mode would be metro free, offer the regular Win7 start menu and have aero. If you wanted to change it back you should be able to in the control panel or right click desktop properties. This would keep everyone who has been using Windows since 1995 happy, and all the little ubergeeks who like to think they are better than everyone else cause they are running the latest OS happy as well. Everyone wins.

Except for Microsoft who is trying to push sales of apps through it's store. That is why the start screen is never going away. They want to push content to you. Content you will pay for yet ignore the fact that the past 2 decades Windows has been built on the concept of getting software from different vendors and installing it on your machine. If they could get every software vendor of size to use ONLY the app store then they might get more traction. As it is Microsoft is too late to the party. It's never going to work the way they want it to.

Good point. The thing is Apple has its app store and it works just fine without being in the users face all the time. When you want it, its right there and when you don't its nicely hidden away. It can be done. I agree though that Microsoft is too late to the party.
