Yes ChromeOS literally was a customized Linux distro... Just like Android is. And later versions could run Linux software!

And I need a monster sized citation needed on the claim that Microsoft screws up Windows more with each patch cycle, considering I see almost no machines in for virus related problems anymore... and I almost never see a BSOD outside of hardware fault... and I have business class machines that started their lives with Windows 7 on them still in service running Windows 10 and are likely to remain so until 10's end of life in Oct of 2025.

That's a LONG history of positive progress where over time I got to focus more and more on doing productive things, and helping clients do new cool things, instead of taking money from them to fix busted old crap.

No, you don't. What someone else needs is accurate powers of observation. Windows has never been as stable, and good at its own "care and feeding" as it is today. Most of the crap I had to deal with for years disappeared entirely with Windows 8/8.1.

I get very, very few service calls related to Windows itself these days.

Technically that's true but it's not a real desktop OS if you can't install programs or store files or do the things people actually want a desktop OS to do. You could argue that Chrome extension are "programs" but they're really not. And yes, I know you can store files but it really wasn't designed to do that with only 32GB of storage or whatever modern Chromebooks have (probably 64GB by now).

To be fair, 90% or more of what I do on Windows is just in a browser. And later versions of Chrome os do allow you to install Linux based programs. I had several on my Chromebook. Also, look at the new desktop virtualization service they're rolling out. Chrome os is way more capable than you seem to think.

Yep, and it'd be even more capable if Microsoft wasn't hamstringing it.

The RDS client for Linux is rather crap, and we don't have a version that supports Azure VDI very well.

Not that the hardware is very good, but quite a few Chromebooks can run full Linux, and some can even run Windows. So there is a path out of Chrome OS just not a great one.

On some devices there is the limitation of storage, as some models only have 16GB, but it's still technically doable.

Is Chromebook expiration in any way tied to the Linux 5-year LTE cycle?

I'm a Linux fan but to see them brag up the LTE 5-year releases makes me shake my head sadly when Win10 is just finishing up 10 years.

Windows 10 was released middle of 2015... Yes, I know it is supported up through 10 years.

As for Linux, you cannot really expect more than a 5-yar support life-cycle. That said, there are newer Kernels, and it would be trivial for Google to upgrade the underlying OS kernel

I work in a school district and welcome the extension of updates. In reality most Chromebooks will never last 10 years in a school setting. Most likely after 5 years the majority of the devices will look like this:
