Was watching the weather all day and into the night. The news kept yelling about a pretty darn good chance of a bad storm hitting us. Ive seen this before and they always die out before hitting us. Most of the time that is. So, Im expecting some big storm around midnite and nothing really happens. Some small lightning and a little rain. Big deal. My girlfriend asks me "Should we be concerned?". I told her no, I dont think so. This doesnt really look that bad. Then I went out on the front stoop to kinda monitor things.

A few minutes later the tornado sirens starting going off. WTF? I dont see anything. Then all of a sudden the wind started. I went inside and my girlfriend asked again if we should go in the basement. I told her lets just wait a minute more here...

All of a sudden the wind REALLY picked up and I opened the front door to the sound of BIG oaks cracking in a massive wind storm! It rained so hard I could not see to the road in front of the house and yelled for her to head to the basement as our power suddenly went out.

Be storm hit so suddenly it was unbelieveable. It was like night and day. It only lasted about 20 minutes as we sat in the basement with flashlights. Power never came back and we listened to some rather startling sounds of trees cracking, falling and hitting things. I really got a sour feeling in my stomach thinking of what things are going to look like after all this was over. Our neighborhood is chocked full of very large oaks and I was sure it was going to look like a war zone when all this was over! After a while things calmed down and I told my girlfriend that Im going to bed. Nothing we can do right now as it was about 2AM.

Got up about 6AM and the neighborhood was a mess! Large trees down everywhere, Power lines also. Alot of the oaks just broke half way up the trunks. Looked kinda wierd seeing big oaks and about 15 feet up they just broke off. Alot of house damage too. One of our neighbors lost his whole house to a oak that landed in the middle of his house and took out the chimney also. We were fortunate as no storm damage to our house or the neighbor right next door. But other houses looked like a war zone. Within an hour or so we started hearing the chain saws. This went on all during the day on tuesday (the first) and then the steady running of generators everywhere.

Very impressive storm. Hearing all the oaks cracking and falling makes you weak in the knees if you know what I mean.

Cannot get out of neighborhood from here. Blocked by a tree in the road.

Ugh...yeah, hate seeing after-maths like that. When Storm Irene blew through our area...was weeks of cleanup.

I'm up in the White Mountains in New Hampshire right now...wicked T-Storms rolled through here, tomorrow and Fri too. :( When driving Rt 25 through Lake Winnipsaukee area...saw a cloud that sure looked like a funnel spawning cloud. Very unusual side winds.

In all things holy..

I'm so glad you guys are safe and well.

We hardly see storms of this magnitude. Something I'm glad of. But bloody hell, that's bad..

Had one service call so far from a residential that left their computer on during the storm. Lucky no hardware damage but messed up the user profile a bit.

I expect more calls today as people get their power restored. So far no business customers.

Hope your having fun in the mountains and not running into what Bertie has on his vacation thread :)

Thunder storms are scary and no joke.

One day while mowing my lawn the wind was whipping up and the skies were darkening. I should have headed for the garage but you know how it goes. I'm driving an ever tightening loop around my property and all of a sudden I stop dead in awe of what's in front of me. A 15 foot long, 6" diameter Silver Maple branch broke off in the high winds and the jagged edge impaled itself around 8" into the ground. A couple of seconds later it would have landed square on my head!

Man. I couldn't believe it. I asked the wife to finish mowing for me. She laughed. I changed my pants and continued the circuitous journey to nowhere...after the wind died down.
