For those of you who have been following this, see my new post under FYEO. :)
I was able to use hdparm in linux to (below) level format the drive and erase the cylinder that even stored mfg info to fix all this nonsense, but... leaving it in an unfrozen state, caused the drive to autolock with the red flashing screen requesting a pw before the drive could be used. I now have a much easier solution to all of this posted under FYEO.
