ive had enough of fixxing family computers and getting it back in the neck when something turns out not like they expected im through they want the pc fixed they can **** off and pay 60+ pounds for some one else to dot it.

where shalli begin

about a year ago my nan got a free laptop on one of those broadband deals and the second she got it my aunt told her vista is **** (where she got this idea from is beyond me she hasn't even used it) and that she should use xp so anyway i was 15/16 at the time and they came to me and said install xp so i did i installed xp (BTW they didnt even have any xp install media) so i used a dell xp disk and patched it up good (please don't say it i know ) so any way now a year down the line im being shouted at for fucking up the laptop because they now want vista and they don't have any install media for it on the count that it got wiped during the install and im being blamed when i did exactly what i was told so i am ****** off like you would not believe

p.s sorry for not punctuating this but i am really not in the mood ill go over it once ive calmed down

I've been there

Im sure most of us have at some point. I think you hit the nail on the head with letting someone ELSE do grannys computer work from now on.

That's one thing that you need to watch out for, is even though it was said to install it, you should have made some kind of backup of it, i've only done a few (re)installs, and I can't even say how much it has saved me to back it up before hand, if they want it back, I'll just say sure, it'll take about hour at $XX and it'll be like I never even touched it.

But yea, no matter who treats you like that, let the next place deal with it, it's never worth the trouble, even when a restore disk is about 15 or 20 bucks from the manufacture of the computer in some cases.

if they were actual paying customers i wouldn't be so bad because if something went wrong then it stays in work but these are my family me and my step dad have fell out over this and its not fair on me

im gonna have to start piling m,oney into getting a full fista install disk and then charge them for the licences

put it this way im that annoyed i started filling in my tracking docs sarcastically

eg

job title:dumbfucks latop
error: cant even make decisions for himself or keep to them
fix :destroy laptop

so reesk92, you mean that you didn't even get paid a cent to install XP in the first place? and I know what you mean, but it can turn into a nightmare, them calling at 10 at night to ask a question, and they never actually committed to doing it, and things can get kinda messy when your working with family, but you shouldn't have to stock pile a Disk, if a person ever needs to order a part be it a ram chip, or a CD, request a deposit of like 60% to help cover the cost, and if they won't do that, than you'll have a good idea that they'll never would have paid in the first place for the software. and if they don't get it, well you got your 60% and you can resell it on e-bay to recoup the other 40%

zack this is the nightmare it is about 10 now ive had to drop what i had planned to sought out there fuckup as is the usual scenario its not uncomment for me to spend 3+ hours fixing their pcs and then get payed a 10ner at best i mean i worked a hour at a family freinds house (xp install) and at least they gave me 230 quid not much i know but it was a favour to them

as ive said once this lot is over im gonna stop this nonsense but it will get worse i know it will especially between me and my parents they are definatley going to have a problem with me refusing to fix there pcs

man jus thinking of the argument this will cause is making me upset

anyway this is definatley gonna be a job thats gonna take me way into the early hours of the morning ill be lucky if i even get payed as i said no more

Dang, the last time I ever got a tenner was when I was 12 installing ram in a aunt's pc, after that day, I've always get paid, but after a certain point, it's not worth it, I've known the feelings, you have family yelling and everything else, and it'll all been avoided if they would have just pre-planned it before hand, and I could see the parents issue backfiring, and if it does end up in an all out augment, just take a time out, and in laymen terms, talk about your choices.

And make sure to always stand up, say to them, no pay, no work, I've been working on them long enough, I believe I know what to do, and as such, I want the respect that comes with it, which includes pay, if you don't respect that, there other shops that'll be more than happy to take it, and let that be the end of it.

i wish it were that simple bu sadly it isnt they would just have a go at me it happened before case in point grandad toldme his freind was having trouble with something on his pc so i turned up at my grandads house with all my tools(1 small sixe hardshell suitcase trolley i shoulder bag and a external cd drive case just before we left he i was bringign out my stuff and his answer was leave all that **** here you dont need it we had a argument about the fact that i needed it he said no you dont my mates told me whats wrong and you dont need all this **** (erm then why am i turning up hesounds quite capable dosent he ) anyway left the stuff there was there about 10 mins and couldnt even figure out what was wrong because i didnt even have my tools and because his mate was watching my every move so there was no way i was going online there and downloading my tools while he was watching (i dont really like having to explain me self to people like that ) any way soem kinda problem with msn not connecting so i just bullshited my way out of there later on my om asked what was wrong with it and i simplay said i have know clue i probably could of fixed it but grandad refused to let me take my tools down any way later on my grandad found out what i said and argued the toos saying he never said i couldnt take them down and it caused a argument between us and the family

back to this though hes gone and took my cousins laptop so he can get online again eevn though he has a desktop pc upstairs but rwont use it either because he wants to be able to watch telly while hes on it or because he got caught flirting online on the desktop and thinks weve installed spyware on it (err we hadnt the dumb **** just dosent deletelete emails and told us his password so when some woman loogen in flirting we checked his email go figure

im gonna have to start piling m,oney into getting a full fista install disk and then charge them for the licences

Why? Just get a Vista Disk from E-Bay. The laptop should have a Vista Liscense on it. BTW, if I'm not mistaken, I think all Vista disks are full install disks.

If it were me and they started giving me grief for doing what they asked me to do in the first place I would tell them to take it to someone else. Family or not.

Man, I know how that must have been, personally, I keep all my tools on a flash drive, so in case I'm in a hurry and I have a guess it's software, I usually bring my Flash Drive and a Mini-CD with BartPE on it, about 75% of the time it'll help. And the other 25%, I'll just tell them I'll fix it next time around without the inital fee, cause it's my fault for not bringing it.

But yea, I've had a client ask me what I was doing, so I explained it, but they didn't understand, they eventually just left and went into other room.

by full cd i meant eh actual install disk and not the oem disk that comes with pcs plus it would be the ultimate disk as it does comewith all versions on it

Yea, good point there, but than again, to actually justify buying it, would the profit you gain from using it, be able to cover the costs? And one thing you must remember, is to always have money put back, so if you dump all your savings into getting this, how quick can you build it back up?

But yea, if it's profitable for you, I'ld say go for it, it may pay off one time, and if you have there hdd from a virus, there's a program I once saw that could extract the keys for windows from a backup of windows.

It would do office and some other programs to, wished I remember the name of it.

I usually don't chime in on things like this but a few points are screaming at me:

1) If you ask a 15 yr old to do something as important and time consuming to a computer as installing XP overtop an OEM install of Vista - and you ask them to do it for free - what are you expecting? You get what you pay for (even if the 15 yr old is a genius). A PC tech might have used Vista's partition manager and installed XP alongside - Since you had an OEM install from the broadband co., it obviously wasn't Vista Business with the XP downgrade. So perhaps you should have put whatever copy of XP you had alongside?

2) Reesk, as PC tech, would you really ever install XP over an oem Vista install without using the built OEM recovery partition or recovery disc creator firs? At the very least, wouldn't you tell them that this impairs/destroys the ability to go back to Vista?

3) Reesk as a PC tech, you don't have a retail copy (or vLite'd copy) of Vista? Really?

Maybe I'm just grumpy today, but you're rant is not making sense. You usually have a lot of good things to say, but today you're letting your emotions get the best of you.

No harm meant, just calling it as I see it.....

those are valid points let be elaborate further

1 i did mention the fact that i would need about a hour or 2 to make the vista recovery disks incase they wanted to go back to which they replied froget it were not going back (this is the main reason im ****** that its come back to bite me in the ass and their denying it all)

2 they had no intention at the time of going back to xp so the duel partion method seemed pointless and wastefull

3 i know ive not had enough work needing a vista intsall disk to need to buy it usually they have there recovery but ive set up a caount in my bankand its beeing funded when ever i can to save up fortheese kind of things so i willbe prepared soon

edit OUCH £174.00 wow thats gonna sting there gonna have to start paying real once ive bought this if im gonna put that kind of money into getting tools such as this im goona want to be treated right not just called round and paid a fiver im talking 20 quid minimum and thats for the first hour probable 15 after that

@ comtech , reesk is no pc tech, he's a kid messing around with computers, who doesn't know much, he hangs out here on technibble, to vent his frustration, and take it from me he isn't a genius by any stretch of the imagination, at around 150 posts I'm still waiting to have some decent input from him, basiclly he's been posting trash from the start.
@ reesk no hard feeling, I just think you should keep a lower profile untill you know a little more about computers , and I think you should pirate a copy of vista like you patched the xp in the first place, and just a little bit of advice " don't work for family untill you know what your doing"

yours sincerly
ABE

fisrt of all why do i feel that this is gling to turn into a thread whos sole purpose is to bash me just becasue im 17 and work with computers
dont forget bryce started out much younger than me yet here we are using his site

second advanced computer group i have had expirience from a small groups of freinds family and school (long story involving pc contracts ) over the course of 4 (maybe it was 3 )or so years as ive said before im plannignon getting the official windows disks abe and charging for their licenses (as is the norm)and abe as for saying i am just some kid who messes with pcs please dotn judge me even though i imagione your ****** off with kids taking your buisness for a quick buck im not like that im in this for the long run im buying the correct install disks this month and going to be stricter with my methods so please lets not start arguing

p.s why is it always the regulars who have a problem with me

IMHO I would rather him work on his family computers for free, or very little, and gain at least some experience in the process.
I would hope that your family would not try and sue you if you totally borked their system.
Weather you 15 or 25 you have to start somewhere. I first started messing with computers around Win98, so I have not worked on computers as long as some of the members here, and I bought or borrowed any computer books I could find to read to see what made them work, I also would buy cheap computers from second hand stores to mess around with until I was comfortable with working with them.
Back then we/I didn't have the luxury of the vast internet and forums like we do today. I agree that reesk's post need a lot of work. Sorry reesk. Everyday I learn something new and hopefully so will he.
Just my 2 cents.

Why dont you just tell your family you dont know how to do it? Sorry I dont know how to fix that computer problem, what else can they say? I had my stepdad's sister literally greet me at the door with an old computer wanting me to swap harddrives into the new one.. but my stepdad tried to install some questionable microsoft office thing first and it screwed up windows and they blamed me. But they never asked me to fix a computer thing for them again!

Why dont you just tell your family you dont know how to do it?

i already have problems with my stepdad thinking he knows mopre than me (we spent 4 hours arguing that ms works is not the same thing as ms office and that installing both just to get the launch menu from works was a bad idea)
that would only play into his hands .

as ive said im not gonna fix there pc untill the start to give me more respect
