Testing fan header

I have a laptop with a dead fan, but I'm not so sure that the fan itself is the problem. Do any of you know the specifics of testing the fan header....I mean to say, the fan control circuit? I'm showing my ignorance here, but I'll throw it out there any way.

It's a 4 wire header - red, yellow, white, and black wires from the fan. I'm thinking that:

red = 5v
yellow = control
white = sensor
black = ground

I'm also thinking that if power is supplied to the fan, and if power is supplied to the control, the fan should run.......but, I'm not sure about the voltage. I'm guessing up to 5v to the control. The machine in quesiton is an HP DV6000 series, if that helps. I have the service manual available for this thing, but there isn't a mention of pinouts anywhere in it.

In a nutshell, if anyone knows the specifics on testing notebook fan circuits, or if you can point me in the right direction for finding out for myself, I'd be very grateful.
