I added my website to my sig and now I am like the 4th for kingston ontario computer repair on google.. the rest are junk directory websites. Anyone else have good Seo tips?

You will get better results using the keywords in the actual link, like this:
Kingston Ontario Computer Repair

Search engines will give you more "juice" for a link like that.

I do SEO for a living (majority). There is a lot that goes in to it.
Here is a few quick tips.

1. your meta tags are pretty good, (description is good) you should change your keywords, at the moment it looks like this:
<meta name="keywords" content="Computer Repair Kingston Ontario Heroes Consulting Anti-virus on-site" />

It should look more like this:
<meta name="keywords" content="Computer, Repair, Kingston, Ontario, Heroes Consulting, Anti-virus, on-site" />

Small things like this matter.

2. Use alternate text on all your images, so you have your image like this:
<img src="/images/Computer%20Heroes%20Logo6NoBar.gif" alt="Computer Heros Repairs" border="0" width="405" height="198">
(Do NOT fill the alt with keywords, use one max)

3. Use your keywords in the titles of your sections, eg:
Computer Heroes providing Computer Service and Repair for Kingston Ontario

I would re-word this:
Computer Service and Repair for Kingston Ontario - Computer Heroes
Use this same format for all your titles of pages.

4. If you want to get really serious, lose Joomla and get something custom coded, then utilize the H1 tags

5. This is where you build backlinks, Submit your website to yahoo DIR, and also your local phone listing website (mine is yellowpages) then add some links on forums, ask your clients if they can link to your site. Keep backlinks relevant to your industry, Do Not get a backlink from a Hairdresser for Computer Repairs, these wont give you much pull. Use your tagline as the link, like I showed above.

6. Don't go after more then about 3 keywords of phrases, once your have achieved top rank for 3, then consider chasing more.

7. Get a tracker on there to see whats going on, http://www.google.com/analytics/
Use this to see where your traffic is coming from and help target backlinks and keywords.
Also, look into creating a sitemap.xml for your site and add it into your google dashboard, make sure robots.txt is all good while you are there.

8. Go over your content and try pack in a few keywords, (Dont go crazy) it still has to make sense to a human reading it, but use your keywords in your content, add a <strong>tag to the start of your text that has keywords then </strong> finish the text normally.

Do the above and wait 2 weeks and see how you go, then consider refining with other techniques, you should research into SEM, SEO and Social Network Submitting.

This is just a start, you can have your website be the main source of all your clients if you wanted to put in the time and effort. My company gets 95% of leads from Google search results, we don't even advertise ANYWHERE and have a steady flow of clients all the time.

It also helps that Google already thinks a lot of Technibble Forums and is indexing our posts many times a day. Just try searching for a phrase in a recent Technibble Forum post that you think is not likely to be found everywhere on the net.

I just Googled the exact phrase "Wow thanks snake you are my new best friend!" It does not show up yet (23 minutes), but I bet it will shortly.

Yes, this will get you indexed quickly, like if you submit your website to Digg.. Even if no one diggs the site, it will be crawled and indexed faster into google then if you were to manually submit your site to google.
Being indexed and ranking are different though, ideally you want to optimize your site before its indexed, then refine it from there.. that way your not waiting to see the effects as long.

Well, that posting has not yet shown up in Google, but the thread showed up 21 hours ago: "Technibble is great Seo!"

Snake, Thank you for the clarification. Isn't it true though, that being linked to by better ranked sites will increase your own site's ranking moreso than being linked to by a low ranked site? Google takes into account whether you are linked to from a link farm or from a Technibble doesn't it?

I have read that is the case, but I will leave that answer up to Snake. He seems to know is stuff.

Yeah that's correct. you also want to make sure those links are relevant to your website content too, Google isn't dumb. Say I have website about IT repairs and I have a heap of backlinks from websites that are about Pet rabbits (lol) it's not gonna do me too well.
I've also ranked pages with no Page rank above those with high page ranks, so it almost leads me to believe PR is not important. PR is only good for backlinks (as you said) - imo.

You should start by targeting a keyword that isn't very competitive, you can search for a keyword or term then view other peoples page source and see what they've done then just use that as an idea of what they are trying to rank for. So instead of trying to rank for "Computer Repairs" narrow it to something like "South Sydney Computer Repairs" (no one appears to be targeting this) check out your competition and their site source code.

Once you start ranking for a term you will get the feel of what to do, start getting some backlinks etc, site gets a bit of age and indexed pages... then go after more competitive keywords.

Also remember sometimes you will get better results for targetting less competitive terms, think about the way people word their searches.. If I was going to find a computer tech I wouldn't go to google and type in "Computer technicians" I would more likely search for the area I live and the service I require.

One last thing, list your location on google maps, add a google map to your contact page, add your Local phone number on all pages (and address) and this will help you rank in the top half of google when you get the Geo targeting "business near you" results at the top

This is just from my experiences.

If someone wants to post their site and their competitors website I could give a better run down on why they aren't out ranking the other

I'm still trying to figure out the Google local business service. Take for example these search keywords;

Bristol PC Repair

Bristol Computer Repair

Bristol Laptop Repair

HCRepairs always appear above me, apart from on "bristol computer repair" (presumably because those keywords are in my domain name). However HCRepairs always appear at the top of the local business section and I don't even appear once! Under "Bristol computer repair" they're the only listed company under the "local business" section!

They can't spell though...

"Please note that a full 12month version of Kaspersky is included with any
Dulux Service Package we have on offer. "

think they mean Deluxe unless they also sell paint!

I assumed it was something to do with distance from the center of the town, which kinda sucks. I can't help living so far out :(

Do you find you get more work since being at the top of the local business section?

Yeah bagellad is correct.

Simmy - Maybe you could get a PO Box in town and have that as your address, this way you can fool google in a legit way?

Just an idea...
