System restore

Say I have my bench machine and I have a customers hard drive in a caddy in it and I'm removing viruses.

Is it possible to use the system restore files on that customers hard drive and restore it back to one of those dates while running my bench machines host OS?

I imagine I need some sort of software to do so, so I'm asking is there anything like that out there?

I suppose an alternative is to go into the snapshots folder and copy the 5 registry files into the *:\windows\system32\config dir and overwrite the bad registry.

Your last sentence is the key. That is the only way to do an offline system restore that I know off. Done it many times. Once the system is booted you then want to do an older system restore from within Windows. That will make certain the system truely is in the proper state.

I bet Offline system restore won’t work for Vista, Win7
Other than booting from install DVD

When it comes back saying your system could not be restored your screwed

If we could access them it would help, they are in the never world somewhere in shadow copy I believe

This is what I have done successfully a few times....including on my wifes laptop just a few days ago. Browse into the previous versions (or regback)...grab the 5x registry files from some time prior to the blowup....restore them, boot up...then run a normal system restore to the time immediately before that (or that date/time again).

I dont think you can use offline sys restore in D7
with free version

I have used the regback folder a few times but they usually get replace everyday so they are only a day old

When I use offline sys restore in D7
its says it must be done in Windows recovery environment
I suppose that means to boot up with repair dvd
Can I run D7 in that mode?
