I know the general consensus on Symantec around here and I apologize for adding to it. I absolutely loath this company. My company uses Symantec Endpoint Protection (their new AV product) and it never works correctly. Then I call tech support and I'm on hold for an hour waiting for someone to open my ticket just for them to tell me that I need a f***ing number that they never gave me before!

Whew...I feel better, thanks.

Well I agree with this more or less and this new on for businesses is more in the direction of thier consumer applications. It isn't bad when you know what you need to do when you set it up but you might go through some trial and error rounds. It took us reloading it about 3 times to get it set up right on our servers.

Yep, took me 3 reloads also and i finally figured out what I needed to do. Good thing to cause I was about to throw my server out the window.

Speaking of Symantec. I was at a customers place last week working on a budget system I put together for her last year. By budget I mean she told me all she needed was to get online and check email. She wanted to spend no more than $100.

I threw together a p4 system with 512 RAM and a 20 gig HDD.

She had called this day to tell me her computer was running extremely slow and she had no internet access. I asked her if she had updated to the latest AVG sense I knew I had installed the older version before it left the shop. She avoided the question.

I get there and AVG was no where to be found, instead she had installed Norton internet security 2008. I informed her that the only way I would work on the computer was if I first uninstalled Norton.

While I understand that the big box stores are going to push this crapware, for them to recommend it to someone without knowing their system specs is in this case almost criminal.

Yes she did. fortunately I had the Norton removal tool on one of my flash drives. Unfortunately Norton deleted 6-7 files from my drive before it could be removed.

As a rule now I will not work on a system that has Norton installed unless the customer lets me remove it. If not, I wont touch it. (its like saying I want my computer to run correctly, but leave all the spyware and viruses on it)

It might be worth putting a few of your apps on a CD and running them from there so it doesn't start deleting crap from your drive. It'd piss me off every time something deleted something from my drive.

It doesn't matter what the system specs are. Norton/Symantec will slow down ANY AND EVERY system. I stick with Avira Antivir for my antivirus because it catches more viruses and isn't a total resource hog.
