stumped here, MSE won't update no matter what

I've got one right now, showing the same thing. I don't seem to have the Intel drivers installed, so I couldn't try that.

The BITS service is not there, but I can't seem to find a way to try and install it. Just the MS BS about it's already part of Win 7. Grrrrrr

Anybody having any luck here?

Thanks.....

You can recreate the BITS service from the command line. Should be able to Google it. Also, FoolishTech just made some major improvements to D7's Windows Update Repair functionality. Highly recommend giving it a whirl. Make sure it is updated first.

yes, I'd like to see if the newest version of d7 fixes works for you, keep us posted, this sounds like its a win 7 thing specifically and showing up more.

When I gave up and went home last night I have managed to recreate the bits service but when I try to start it I got a "missing file".

I also tried the most recent version of D7 and was still unable to update Mse or successfully run Windows update. I am reasonably convinced that the bits service is at the core of the problem.

Tomorrow I plan to see if I can't recreate the proper Bits registry entry and replace the file.

Browsing around tonight I found a somewhat hopeful thread on the major geeks forum. It was similar to some of those incredibly tedious threads on bleepingcomputer.com, except this one actually seemed to be helpful. They used a combination of mgtools, a reg entry to recreate the netsvcs registry entry and windows repair from tweaking.com.

I'll try to keep everyone posted.

Hmmm, another thing I noted was she had some permission issues after the virus cleanup, I repaired them with d7 but it reported many errors in the process, perhaps it could be related? I used the tweaking.com repair tool on the windows update issue too, didn't help, then I tried d7, fail.

The latest version of D7 does rewrite the BITS reg entry, and after repair it does take a restart for it to begin working fully. Which was your 'latest' version? The latest free version 6.7 doesn't do this fix. v7.2+ does.

If you used v7.2+ and the BITS services entry still isn't present in the registry, then you are likely still infected because the malware has either re-deleted the BITS service reg key or is preventing the reg import of the settings. I have seen this behavior with latest versions of zeroaccess/sirefef where they will delete the reg key as soon as D7 writes it if it isn't fully removed before attempting the repair.

If either of you fix the problem, please let me know what you did specifically to fix it so I can add this functionality to D7! :)

Have the same error code 80246008 when Windows update is used. Customer told me they had used Malwarebytes to clear out a virus and that windows update would not work.

So I started with the usual mem and hard drive diagnostics. Both came up fine no problems, which I don't get either because the computer is running so slow. Takes 20-30 seconds when you click a desktop icon for it to load the program. While I was running the tests I researched on the error code with the same results as above posters. I ran D7 (free version) and manually went through the malware processes to see if there was anything lingering but came up zero.

Tried manually entering the bits code, didn't work either.

So Wednesday when I get the full version of D7, I'll try running that again.
If nobody has posted by then, I'll post my results.

Just in case it helps at all, it is an HP Pavillion a6230n ,has 2 AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 5600 with a 400gb hard drive and 8gb 800 Mhz ram.

Well I bought D7 today, and I am quite impressed, well worth paying for. It however did not fix the Windows updater issue. Now it could very well be somthing I did as well because I tried several different fixes, so I might have fubar'd it, might work for someone that has just had it happen and not tried all kinds of other things. I do recommend every tech to have this in their arsenal though.

Hmmm, if D7 corrects the reg entries for BITS and it sticks, maybe a file has been sub'd with an infected version?

Any positive ID on the malware? Perhaps the system changes it makes have been documented?

May I suggest.....

Install a fresh copy. Do not allow to update.
Uninstall the new copy via Revo.....set the setting for advanced mode when asked. This will find a lot of "extra" associations that may be causing the problem. If it is 64bit.....try the trial of revo for 64bit.

Install new copy from a different site, such as Filehippo, in case of a bad download.

If that doesn't work try AppRemover to look for any leftovers.
