I have been searching around for days trying to figure out what is causing this BSOD. I'll outline what the screen says then tell the many steps I've done trying to figure this out.

the BSOD says:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Technical Information:

HSX_CNXT.sys - Address B970A3B8 base at B9666000, DateStamp 45366d81

google keeps showing me the STOP error has to do with memory but I've ran extensive tests on the memory (memtest and a few others) and they show zero problems.

The other error I'm not quite show how to test.

It's an older Dell Inspiron 531 with XP home edition installed. I've ran several virus protection software like CCleaner, MalwareBytes, AVG, and others and cleaned up that way but I still get this blue screen. Also it doesn't come up right away, I have to leave it on overnight and it will pop up sometime then. I've worked on this thing for several hours and have yet to see the blue screen actually pop up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The errors you are seeing are to do with hibination - HSX_CNXT.sys

From memory i think that is a modem driver file. Does the PC have an internal modem ?

EDIT: its a conexant soft56 modem driver file. Either update driver or if that doesnt resolve, remove modem and software and replace if required

If this doesn't work mau64, we'll need to see the dump file.

You are right, it is a conextant driver, but I am sure the error is still a Hiberbation error, and the fact that he is leaving it on overnight and the error ocurrs would support my theory.

I would disable hibernation and standby and see if the error persists. You can then look at updating the driver, disabling the device or stop the device from waking the PC.

I think TLE is correct. I just threw the computer into standby mode and it immediately went to the blue screen. I'm going to work through the tutorial you sent me and see if that fixes it.

Thank you guys very much.

So it was the modem card all along. I just disabled it and threw the computer into hibernation and it didn't blue screen for me. I turned it back on and put it into hibernation and it went straight to the blue screen.

Thank you guys so much for the help. I have been racking my brain on that this whole week.

Glad to hear it worked out for you, I have seen modems cause the strangest problems.

Were all here to learn and become better tech's. Glad you have isolated the problem. :D
