hi

need some help, little baffled although i think i might be right.
i sold a mate a lovely condition used Dell E6420 laptop. all was fine and he said it recently started crashing, he had a battery and charger issue which i sorted for him.

anyway, he installed windows 10 thinking it might solve it but it made it worse. blue screen all the time, reboots. blue screen comes up with bad_system_config_info which i googled and found to be a windows problem. i thought ok i'll reinstall windows. this machine crashes when its in the bios! it did boot to windows install screen but then fails to read the SSD. i have had the SSD out, sandisc ultra 120 gig and tested it and my main rig says no errors and it's fine. however, windows install detects but says cannot be installed to the drive as the hardware won't allow.

finally got into the bios without it crashing and everything set to defaults and sata mode is AHCI. still no good.

i'm going to change out the hard disc to a normal sata and a spare ssd i have to test if its that but i'm thinking its more hardware based with something wrong on the mobo. any thoughts or suggestions?

ok, replaced the ram, reseated the ssd, took cpu heatsink off and re-applied thermal paste. cleaned all the gunk that was on it too.

booted and i managed to install windows. still crashes and when it reboots comes up with cannot find boot drive. restart and boots. flashing bios now.

booted up after that but whether it is stable we'll see.

Run Hirens and/or Knoppix or any boot disk. It's good form to run a rudimentary check of the HW before wasting time chasing SW issues.
