Stopzilla

Does anyone have any experience with this software. It doesn't seem to turn up in any recent reviews and as far as I can tell, no one with any experience uses it, but it turns up now and then that customers have installed it. The reason I ask is that I am working on a computer here and AFTER a MWB, Avira and Combofix scan, Stopzilla turns up another 48 malware entries. This means it is either an amazing tool or something is a little fishy.

I have never heard of it, then again that does not surprise me.

I don't use many scanners. I have had better luck with manual removal. However, a rule of thumb is if they require you to purchase it to remove what it finds then its a scam.

I'm 99% sure this is a rouge. It used to be advertised a lot, much like Registry Mechanic is now

Stopzilla turns up another 48 malware entries. This means it is either an amazing tool or something is a little fishy.

Those are false positives that are designed to goad the user into purchasing the 'full version'. As such it's scam software and I would remove it and advise your customers against its use as there are genuine free alternatives.

I have not seen it in a couple of years, I think the last time I did it was on an ME.

I have always thought it was a rogue and removed it. I think Spybot S&D and maybe SAS detects it as a rogue.

Thanks for your input. I concur, Stopzilla is a rogue. It found items in the Windows/System32 folder that weren't there prior to booting (evidence strongly suggests Stopzilla put them there). Moreover, no other legitimate software identifies these programs as viruses.

It appears that it keeps finding new "threats" until you allow it to do a cleaning, then it reports that everything is OK. I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts if I leave it on the machine for a few days new "threats" will turn up.

They sell it in a box software at Best Buy. I see it on customers PC's from time to time.
But I've found it to be quite useless, and at least borderline if not totally spyware itself.

I would remove it, and then run your other scans again.

They are playing on the fact that most people tend to trust *zilla software.

they,ve been around for a while now i tried them out back in about 2000 and they cause more problems than it fixed
