Started the biggest project of my career today

Today I began one of the biggest projects I have ever worked on. I was contracted in late february to develop and revamp an entire schools technology systems - from hardware to software to curriculum. Today my team and I began work on the upgrades, after jumping through all the budget hurdles, getting approval to order things, and all of the other school related policies one goes through.

The entire upgrade should take two weeks, as I am only spending two hours a day onsite.

Total project is about $25,000. They received new laptops via a grant. HP EliteBooks...8GB of RAM, i5 vPro, Win 10. We are introducing new docking stations for all of the teachers, so they have both a portable device, but when they want to connect to their smart board, they just dock, and voila. We are also upgrading their entire lab with HP Chromeboxes, as they already have Chromebooks implemented and use Google classroom services. We are installing Google Cloud Print printers, too. We are refurbishing the current desktops (roughly 40, they are about 7 years old) and giving them to low income families/families in need in the area.

I am billing the school for my time, but what is even sweeter is that they are getting my managed BitDefender product, so I will get a massive recurring revenue from them.

Overall, a great project if all goes as planned. I have had a constant feeling I am forgetting something. I am not familiar with day to day activities of teachers workflows or even software they use. Their current state of technology is jumbled mess of everything jerry-rigged together. I am demanding uniformity across the school in terms of technology and software the school (and us) officially support.

Good stuff! Do you get to redo the network infrastructure? New switches, VLANs for students/staff/offices/etc. Firewall management for CIPA?
Get something like a good Untangle software subscription for their firewall, that's a juicy annual profit.

Unfortunately not. They have another contractor for that, so I am not messing with it. He does a pretty decent job, I've worked with him on a few things before. The only thing I am doing network wise is rewiring their 20 port switch for their lab to clean it up. However, if our upgrades need networking done here and there, we are authorized to make changes (like the printer config). All of my guys and myself know CISCO, so that is a plus.

Wow how did you land a deal as 3rd party it to handle a school system? I take it that it must be a private or charter school? Would love to have a chance at that.

Yep, it's private. I used to do a lot of volunteer work for them back in the day. They have no IT staff on-site, either, and their entire infrastructure is a mess. Not for long, though. ;).

Congrats! Because schools are closed during the summer what will they have you be doing during those off months? I know some staff will be around. Curious if you are billing them a monthly service plan or billing by the job/hour.

The summer months are actually the busiest times of years for schools. Not only are we dealing with new technology, but we are repairing, and upgrading current technology for the upcoming year. We begin planning for the next school year (2018-2019) in a few months. Next year we should be at a complete 1:1 program.

Right now, they are on an hourly plan with me at my discounted rate of $65/hr. I'd love to get them on retainer. I'm a 45 minute drive each way and am charging that rate for my drive time every Friday. I got all computers setup on TeamViewer, and I repaired SmartBoard connectivity remotely today.
