Hi,

I'm having a rough time with a laptop. I don't know what I'm missing
or maybe I've been away from repairs too long.

I installed an SSD drive in a compaq laptop that was built 2007. I have updated bios and reset MBR. I don't know what to do next.

The drive will only boot by resetting bios to default settings. After that
it will just sit there and not boot again till I reset again.

The curser in the upper left shows up for the first boot only.

Any help would be awesome!

Have you checked/updated the firmware for the SSD? What brand SSD and which laptop are we looking at?

There has been a lot of talk about the OCZ drives having issues just like your experiencing.

It is an OCZ....

The bios lists internal hard drive, dvd drive, floppy, in that order.

If I select internal for boot it still just sits there.

Only until I reset to default does it see the OCZ...

Could always reload the OS.

No, he can't. The OS isn't the problem, he has to RESET THE BIOS everytime for it to work.

Check this out this was on the OCZ forum, it might help:

1. Switch off System.
2. Turn off the PSU, remove Power cord from outlet.
3. Disconnect the LE and all other drives.
4. Remove CMOS Battery.
5. Press PC case power button for 20 seconds to discharge capacitors.
6. Short the CLR CMOS jumper and leave all to 'drain' for about 30 minutes.
7. Reset jumper/Re-insert the Battery
8. Attach power/turn on PSU and configure CMOS to safe Defaults and set:
a. AHCI SATA mode.
b. Any CMOS Hot Plug/External SATA settings [DISABLED] on the LE port.
9. Save CMOS settings, re-boot to CMOS.
10. Connect the LE back to SATA port 0/1 via a Hot Insert/Plug/Connect the SSD while in CMOS, by placing SATA Power lead on first, then SATA signal Cable.
Then save CMOS and re-boot back into to CMOS to check if SSD is detected.
a. (At this stage, only the SSD on SATA port 0/1 and CD/DVD drives SATA port 4/5 should be attached).
11. Put the Bootable Tools CD in it’s drive, change Boot Order to CD/DVD first and Boot to it.

a. Secure Erase the SSD
b. Force Flash the latest Firmware.
c. Power down the system, remove power to the drive for 1 minute, reconnect the drive and power on.

When I was digging up info about a Samsung 256 that Died I came across Secure Erase.. which is supposed to be like the cure-all for these OCZ drives.

So if you look up "SSD Secure Erase" and a Firmware update it may work just fine. Some still report that certain MOBO chipsets don't play well, however.
