Anything special you do to help handle a spill on the laptop? assuming everything is still functioning.. dont worry its another clients computer not the same one!

I'm no expert. Taek it or leave it.
Only thing I can advise on is to make sure you pad out as much as possible, maybe turn it upside down (not sure if there are any hidden dangers there, I would assume no).

Also, try to be as sure as possible that everything is dried up BEFORE trying to power on. Never power on if you have ANY doubts about it being dry.

Yep, that's what I would do. Dry it out for a couple of days, in a well ventilated area, before attempting to switch it on to improve your odds. I would avoid moving it about/turning it upside down. Remove any external PCMCIA cards, memory sticks or USB devices and the battery.

Ok and those are good suggestions, What about when the spill has already happened and dried and the customer gives you a call?? Pretty much I just ended up cleaning up his keyboard so its not sticky (god i hope it is just the ginger ale) but wont eventually the inside of the computer corrode?

It was ginger ale?
Did you already return the laptop?

It could be. I would think it depends on what components the liquid landed on.
Even so, if corrosion were to occur, it would be quite a thing to happen within years, or BEFORE that laptop becomes obsolete. That would have to be some pretty strong stuff.
The sugar that was deposited might be the main factor....but again, I doubt it will cause damage rapidly.

Does anyone here have any experience with this?

Yep corrosion is an issue. You want to disassemble the computer and individual clean and dry each piece. 100% of the moisture must be removed before power is applied. Basically you treat it like a phone that has gone through the washer! :D

If it was tea or cola just forget it. You we never get it clean. If it was water you can try spraying with a contact cleaner solvent and letting it dry 24 hours. Then see if it will work. I have had about 90% success with water spills and about 10% success with tea and cola spills.

Good luck!:)

Best to use a printed circuit board safe cleaner. There are a number of degreasers etc out there like Big Bath etc. They are very toxic and MUST be used outside else you will kill braincells and screw up your nervous system. Don't get any of this crap into your eyes either. I've seen corrosion that is beyond belief and the system still worked. Cat pee and soda are the worst.

Cat pee and soda are the worst.

I repaired a liquid damaged laptop a few weeks back and the lady mentioned something about lemonade. The husband who collected the laptop after the repair said "oh no...it was cat p**s" :( I knew it didn't taste like lemonade!

Isopropyl Alcohol spray can help. Absorbs the water component and also dissolves the sugary gunk from soda drinks. I use a finger pump bottle and get it all up on a bit of a slope to wash the gunk out. If it's localised I put swabs/absorbent material down close to the area and lift it out before it runs down the board. Give it some warm drying time and with a bit of luck she's back in action. Depends obviously where the spillage has penetrated to of course.

For many of the newer better protected units with rubber silicon membrane keyboards it can just be the gooey stuff causing the keys to stick and the alcohol works well here.

A flush with fresh water/Alcohol and a few days drying somewhere warm is a cheap attempt. If it doesn't work very little lost and you can justifiably inform the owner it was damaged beyond repair ...and lead into a sales pitch for a replacement. And/or sell data recovery services on the HD to his new PC.

Always an opportunity...
