I had a Sony laptop on my bench last week that had two HDs in a RAID 0. Of course one of the drives had failed. Incredibly this guy had Carbonite and didn't lose anything important...but what the hell, Sony?

I remember Laptop makers offering 2nd HDD options and some offering RAID options but these were all on custom orders only so I can't really blame the manufacturer. I am not saying that this case is a custom order it could be a number of things a later upgrade on the system as the drop slot is there even when not used. It still could be some marketing mistake by Sony but I do find that less probable.

Agreed. I ran into an external drive a few years ago, I think it was 2TB, which was a lot for the time. Turns out the thing had 2 1TB drives in a RAID 0 and it was marketed as a backup device. The client who was using it was a photographer, and like an idiot kept his lightroom database on the thing - no backup at all. So, he moved files on which he based his livelihood to box with double the risk of failure his desktop had...and because the box had the word "Backup" on it, he thought he was covered! Yikes.

Yeah externals I know they put out for a while in RAID 0 as high speed backup device which kinda true as long as it isn't your only storage for the data but still a poor choice in my book. I just shake my head at those people who run a business and make a business tech decision with out consulting and confirming things with a professional. They are setting themselves up for so much high risk potential and can often be terrible new customers because they are so panicked about the problem they created.

I hate seeing raid on consumer grade systems. When they fail they are a pain in the rear end. And people wonder why sony is not making computers anymore.

I have a friend who's now a truck driver, but he's actually a pretty good tech, just some bad breaks, but if I'm building a system for example, I'd trust him to do it. He was a field tech for a while though and used to get calls for working on sony laptops, and hated every one. He did not care for their build/design at all.

I had a Sony laptop maybe 10 years ago or more and it was great never had one after though and I think typically the price didn't match the specs I only got the one I did because I worked at a CompUSA and got a great discount.
