How does it work in the US claiming for car/mileage? The UK you can claim for a vehicle and the running costs if it is a company asset or you can claim business mileage of 45p a mile for all business related calls and nothing on running costs etc. That is why a Smart car is good(providing it's big enough) at 60-70mpg.

Does the UK version actually get 60-70mpg?

The US version(s) are only advertised as City 33/ Highway 41, which is surprisingly low. There are many other cars that get the same or better mileage and don't look like a shoe.

I doubt it the figures are accurate but are roughly from the manufacturers. Depending on the engine type, size and year you should see around 48mpg in town and about 60+mpg on a run say a motorway. Road tax which for cars can be upwards of £160, can be free up to £30 for the year for a Smart car. It will only ever be me in it for my business and we have the family car for other times. I can totally dedicate this with the advertising etc to my business. Wherever you park it's advertising.

I claim a lot of running costs for the Panda but then it is a company asset as far as I am concerned. I have claimed capital allowances for it etc. 70% of it is for business use, and as the car cost me £6400 brand new it helps reduce the overall tax bill.

It is one reason for my overall profit being so low.

Here is my beast, the day I got it and only about 12 days after it left the factory in Poland.

Been a great little car compared to the bangers, I have thought about putting advertising on it but then I don't want to advertise it to low lifes and also it would probably put up my already very high insurance premiums.

I do plan to keeip the car for many many years though so it is an investment, it has the 1.1 8v FIRE engine which is well proven and very simple to work on but MPG round Manchester is not great at about 42mpg, but it gets 60mpg on the open road.

If this hasn't already been asked.... You guys from the UK and such... When you say "MPG" do you mean "Miles Per Gallon?" Because, unless I'm mistaken, don't you use different forms of measure than us yanks? Those numbers seem REALLY high.
To say "42 mpg (in the city!) is 'not great'" in the US would have someone asking if you're sane. For us, 35-40 miles per gallon is fantastic...and I don't think there's THAT much a difference between our fuel or how we drive.

We mean MPG, miles per gallon but our gallon is different to yours. To make things even more confusing in the UK we buy our fuel in litres.

Costs me £13 to do 100 miles at the moment because fuel prices are so high, £1.38p per litre!

1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liters
3.78541178 * 1.38 = 5.22386826
£5.22386826 = $8.5624
Damn........ I am complaining about $3.75 a gal.

yep you guys do have it easy on fuel. I hear the new Audi A3 can do 85 MPG on a long run although considerably more expensive.

I bought a Smart for work.

4x4s have taken over like a plague big in my city it's become a status thing. People are always pointing at the car, a pointing kinda way as if they were pointing at a clown.

I get around 430 - 460km out of 25L tank works out around 63mpg (imperial) if you haven't driven one, you will be surprised at how quick and well the handle the road on the motorway.

Never have I been to a job were a customers hasn't commented on it, a common question I get asked 'is it electric'.

As I said they are an awesome car and every house should have one.

But space..

I want to start pushing parts and accessory sales whilst on am location to bump up my income and unfortunately the Smart is currently only just fits my tool kit and laptop bag.

I have thought about building shelf in the boot area so I can utilize the whole space, but it is a big risk as that area is the crumple zone and god knows the Smart ain't got much of that.

I have my eyes set on a Toyota Corolla hatch. I was thinking of pulling the back seats out and put in a tray. I thought of getting wrap around advertising so people can't see in at all my gear.

Still going to keep hold of the Smart @ 60mpg it is probably cheaper to run than any electric car will ever be.

Coincidentally I just bought one yesterday and went to see about the wrapping design this morning. I will post it up when it's done.

It blue and silver and certainly catches the eye.

It's rare I need a lot of space but I have 2 other vehicles in case I do

Can't wait to see.. All the plastic panels are inter-changable so you can buy custom painted panels or change the colour.

Smart Cars are cute and a great head turner. I see many with advertisements on them.

But IMO, i would never sit in one. Im 6'2 and i dont think i would be comfortable in it. Plus, i see it as a death trap. What's the safety rating on those things?
