just moved into a new house and noticed cat 5 was wired trough out the enitre house ..was happy =) then i noticed in one of my rooms i had a panel.so i take it off and to my suprise i see all these cat 5 cables , now i know i can use cat 5 for internet and phone service but my question is theres this module in back of the plates where it has two inputs for rj45 and then i see its also has a inut for phone service witch is already wired..along with on the opposite side like 10 outputs with cat 5 comming out of them....is that module something that splits internet to all the outputs of the plate or do i need to manually split all the cat5 for phone and internet? sorry for sounding so confusing

I'm with ACG, pictures would really help. You "can" use one Cat-5e cable for both data and phone but you'd probably have to rig it yourself and I wouldn't recommend it.

From what I understand...

Are you asking if you can split the internet like you do with a phone line? Where you have two phones on one line type thing?

If that is the case... No you need a router. Please post a picture.. and try to explain in more detail. Are you a computer tech?

Cat 5 can be used for both phone (up to 4 lines) or data, but not both at the same time ideally. It sounds like the previous owner cobbled it together for phone. If you want to distribute data through the cables, you may be able if you rewire and use a network switch. But, without some pictures, it will be impossible to tell you what you are dealing with.

As a side note, this could be a difficult and confusing enough for a beginner that it may be a good idea to hire a local technician to do it for you.
