Is a "crossover cable" also known as a "network cable" or "networking patch cable"?? A friend of mine has bought 3 cables like this one ( http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/833235/Ativa-Cat-5e-Network-Cable-7/ ) and none of them work, yet he has an old cable that works fine (Internet connection works). At first I though he was incorrectly using a "crossover cable" instead of a "patch cable", yet on Office Depot's site they refer to this cable as a "networking patch cable", so now I'm confused by the terminology. Is this a "patch cable" or a "crossover cable"? http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/833235/Ativa-Cat-5e-Network-Cable-7/

That's just a regular old run of the mill, dime a dozen network cable. A network cable can be referred to as a patch cable if it's a short cable, just going from a modem to a router for instance. The term patch comes from a patch panel usually used in larger data centers connecting switches to other switches and such. In my experience, if the cable do not say "crossover" then it's always a regular network cable.

You'll find that a crossover cable is used for connecting a computer directly to another computer. i.e. not through a hub, router or switch.

Some RJ45 sockets have 'auto sensing' built in, so that you can use a regular ethernet cable or a crossover, but not all sockets support this.

Since hubs are almost obsolete now, it doesn't matter. Back in the day when you would uplink a hub you would use a cross over cable.

Also look at both ends, if the colors are the same in all places on both ends then it's not a crossover.

Yup, it is very easy to distinguish a crossover cable from a straight through. The company that sold those cables to Office Max could have mixed them up. So you always want to visually inspect them before you buy them just to make sure.

I bought a spool of 1000ft and I just make my own should I need them, this may not be an option if you need 1 or 2 but it made me very familiar with the cables since I made a ton of them.
