Share a External Hard drive

hi guys.
This is the scenario.
I have a Laptop conected to my wireless router, and I connected a WD MyBook external HD using the usb port to it. The laptop is running Vista Home Premiun and is on all the time.


I want to be able to use the hard drive as my Network storage, and be able to access it from another laptop that is also running same version of Vista. I don't want anybody else to access this HD, I have other family members connected to same wireless router. both laptops are in workgroup named "OE", The other thing is that I want to be able to access this drive when I'm away from town.

How can I accomplish this taking in consideration security issues?
Also, I want to be able to backup my other laptop files into this external HD.

Do you have an older computer lying around that you do not use?

If so have you looked into FreeNAS?

Addonics makes a very capable USB / NAS adapter - NASU@.

That might solve the problem.

why not just share the drive and limit the permissions to laptop 1 and laptop 2,

(so then you will have as much p4rn as you want and dad and mom won't know, and get your siblings to pay on a pay per view basis)

these seem a great little tool. if only they were a bith cheaper xD but i guess your getting nas functionality for $50 so its an ok price
