So I've been thinking about taking the Server+ exam and was wondering if anyone had taken it and what they thought about the exam. Was it difficult, did you learn anything that has come in handy...stuff like at.

Also, I'm looking for recommendations on training materials. I used Sybex for the A+ exam but they don't offer one for Server+.

If I remember, the only CompTia certs that companies look for or have any value are A+, Network+, and maybe Security+. If you already have the first two and have some experience, I'd look into MCSA or the entry level Cisco cert like, CCENT or CCNA.

Wouldn't Server+ and Linux+ also be good in the enterprise level market?

I think it depends on the employer. You will see a sharp drop off on job sites if you search A+ and then Linux+. I'm not saying they aren't useful, but they doesn't seem like marketable certs. In general, I think most certs (exceptions being certs like CCIEs) aren't good for anything but getting past HR but are a good motivating tool to get you to study and learn if you need a carrot at the end of a stick.

The important question is if you find value in the particular cert. A lot of people will give you "you need certs!" or "certs aren't worth anything!", but it comes down to your value of the cert and whether or not you feel it will help you get your job. But, in general, Server and Linux+ don't seem to be in high demand.

If you want to do more server administration, I would recommend the MS certfications:

Windows 2003/2000/XP: MCSE
Windows 2008/Vista/Win 7: MCITP

If you would rather get into networking administration then I think the Cisco Certifications are the way to go:

www.cisco.com/certifications

The COMPTia Server+ cert however isn't bad. It's more toward the hardware side of servers SCSI, RAID, multiple CPU's, etc. The MS certs obviously are geared towards Windows where the Server+ will be vendor neutral.

So for me to be a technician at the enterprise level what do you guys recommend?

My Goal is to be a full time Desktop Support Technician on the Southwest Coast.

Im in school for my A+ N+ Server+

I take my Comptia 601 tomorrow 10/17 @ 8:45am

Ill decide on my 602 test date based on my 601 results.

To the op didn't mean the steal your thread! I'm interested in this as well! :)

No worries. I really just wanted to know what people thought about the certs, if they felt they were necessary or how valuable they found them. I understand that value is subjective but a general concensus would be nice.

I took the 601 and 602 2 hours apart. I passed both the first time and did only self study. They weren't very difficult but some questions are worded oddly but you should be fine.

Already on it.... Thanks for the info ColdOne.

I got a 800 on my 601 going to bone up on some practice test with the 602. The girl at the Pearson testing center informed me that people who get an 800 on the Comptia A+ usually also pass the 602 with ease. So an A+ certification is in my future.

I don't really remember what was on what test but I'd say that's a fair statement. I got somewhere in the 800's on the 601 and got a very similar score on 602. Good luck! :)

Based on passing the first exam and your past posts you should have no problem. A lot of it is just common sense questions.
