Server licensing and Remote App...

Drawing up a quote for one of my business customers... I'm upgrading them to a server (currently on a peer-to-peer network), and I have a question about licensing.

Their software vendor says that the best method for running their LOB software is to have it installed on the server and then to virtualize it to the client PC's using Remote App. This is supposed to eliminate most of the database corruption that they've been experiencing with their current setup.

I know that you need to have CAL's for Remote Desktop... but what about with Remote App?

Oh, and also... would there need to be a CAL if it's just one user accessing the server via Remote Desktop... say, myself using the Administrator account for maintenance?

Thanks in Advance!

users have still got to be assigned to remoteapp so will require the normal CAL issued like would for straight server access but not any extra.

yes administrator account still uses a CAL.

your clients business will determine if per device or per user CALs work out best for them.

It's just a mode of Remote Desktop Services (formerly known as Terminal Server)....and the licensing is the same...so 2 licenses per user.
*The normal CAL for your users (or devices if you prefer that method)..for the remote user, just like any local user
*Also need Terminal Server CAL...for that remote desktop session.

So say you have a network with a total of 50 users...both local users, and remote users...you need 50 user CALs.

And say 20 of those 50 users are working from remote sites, you'd need 20x RDS CALs too.

Its actually nowhere near that big... small auto dealer with 3 current workstations/users. I'll set them up on a domain and for the most part they'll do everything on the workstations. The only exceptions would be quickbooks and 2 LOB databases... so 3 applications deployed via remote app.

As far as remote desktop access goes, I would need access myself... they are currently using RDP to access a couple workstations. Would it be cheaper if I just had them to continue with that method?

One more noon question... where do I get the CAL's?

CALs can be purchased anywhere (your normal suppliers not being in US i dont know who you guys will use) or even direct from MS. Remember depending on what version of server you put in you will have the initial CALs that come with the server.

In your scenario with so few users then both server 2012 essentials or server 2012 foundation will both have over the amount of CALs required. Higher versions of server come with 5 to start with.

So right off the bat, without adding any CAL's, I would be able to setup 5 user accounts w/ access to remote app... they can run their LOB software from the server, safely away from their porn habits... and I can go a week without having to fix something.

I like it. LOL

Need to choose TSCAL type first

First decision is what type of TSCALs you will need. Per User or Per Device. If you have more users than computers accessing the server, get Per Device. If you have more computers than users, get Per User.

No. "out of the box" server comes with 5x CALs...this is for "local networking"

You want to add the terminal service role? That's different...totally different CAL, each remote user needs a terminal server CAL "in addition" to their user CAL.
