So I have been using call that girls SEO guide.

"In the guide it says keep a list of other keywords in these searches (usually at the bottom of google)"

I have done that and one of them is "pc doctor doncaster". This is the name of a business and his website etc. he is well known and reputable and often ranks higher than me on google.

My question. If i did a post about how being an it technician is like being a pc doctor and used appropriate tags keywords etc. is that moral or right to do. do you think it would cause a problem with the other business?

I am by no means trying to pass myself off as him or bring his reputation into disrepute.

I wondered on peoples thoughts before i went ahead and did this

Thanks

By making a statement like that you’re just helping him by legitimizing his concept. People think “if I need to PC Dr why don’t I go to the actual PC doctor?”

I would think it better to use tags that caused "pc doctor" to appear in search results, rather than "pc doctor" itself, i.e., whatever "pc doctor doncaster" used that caused his site's name to appear in response to your search terms. I suspect that people aren't searching for "pc doctor" but terms like pc and repair, problem, diagnosis, problem, fix, etc.

"pc doctor" and "doncaster" are not trademarked - go right ahead.

Exactly. Imagine you have a competitor called "UK Computer Repair." "UK" can't be trademarked, and if you just happen to rank for "UK computer repair," that's on them for choosing such a stupid name. It's exactly the same. "Doctor" can't be trademarked. So long as you're not impersonating the other business, you're completely in the right trying to rank for it.

Trademarked or not I wouldnt do it.

It reeks of trying to rank for a competitor's business name, also people searching for "Pc Doctor" are most likely looking specifically for his site and not yours anyway so what's the point?

I'd take Larry's advice on this one.

From what I have read and seen from others doing seo, titles and tags are safe to use, but I am careful to not steal exact if someone is using it for their seo. Glad to see you're using the book!!!

yes the book has been so helpfull i am now super busy with work. I have also booked onto your SEO webinar in December

In terms of SEO it could go either way and if your competitor has a strong online identity you could be influencing the search engine to give them even more prominence. Overall though I think it would help you and your competitor compared to other competitors not referenced so it seems reasonable.

I agree. Nothing wrong with using something similar, but not exact. After all this aspect of advertising is just dovetailing on existing copyright law.
