I started with SCORE back in September of 2007 when I first got the business going. I met with them quarterly for my first year and then moved to yearly, every fall. The last meeting I had with them, they told me it's time to get a lawyer as I was "at that level" and I did, in fact I got 2 lawyers.

SCORE just contacted me, they want to do a story on me being a success story for them and asked me to speak at their annual Women In Business convention. I asked how many attended...oh not many, just 500 women!

Tada!!! Talk about marketing...wow.

Anyway, this thread is about SCORE. I love and adore these folks, if anyone is just starting out and needs great free business coaching, I definately would check out your local chapter. Totally worth it.

SCORE is more like what you did... :)

Congratulations on your success and invite to speak.

Tom

P.S. Service Core of Retired Executives, correct?

I believe she is referring to :

score . org

Small business mentoring and training

Someone asked about SCORE last December. In that post I wrote the following:
Yeah, I had a not so great experience with score back in 2002/2003 when I was starting my business. I had recently moved to the area and didn't know what I had to file with the state, county, city, etc. to start a computer consulting business. I figured the local "Counselors to America's Small Business" would be able to provide me with the information I was looking for. They didn't. Instead they tried to sell me a registry of local accountants, attorneys and business brokers along with some kind of small business guide that I thought was pretty worthless. In my eyes the "Service Corps of Retired Executives" turned out to be nothing more than a bunch of retired guys hanging out at the local score office for coffee & donuts.
I guess it's hit or miss on what you get. I know it's a volunteer organization, but if people are going to volunteer I feel they should take the job seriously. For me, unfortunately, it was a total waste of time. One guy even tried to discourage me from going in to business because of having to compete with the large stores like BestBuy, CircuitCity, CompUSA and warranties from the manufacturers.

callthatgirl, I'm happy it worked out for you. Just goes to show that they can help, depending on who you're working with.

I had a similar experience with SCORE. The person I met with was amazine, had an incredible background....but was not very helpful.

I am going to call them asap to schedule an appt with a new counselor, maybe I'll become the Latino male winner dome day :0
