Hi guys,

did have search but cant seem to find answer.

Have one of these RV511's in needing a new KB. its got the black glossy flush surround around on it.

Having looked online I see that you have to completely disassemble it in order to change the kb, my question is can you just change the kb or do you need a whole new top (touchpad included etc)?

Their available online as both with big difference in prices (unless someone knows better UK supplier), but the pics on ebay etc of kb only dont look like they have the glossy surround bit to them.

Anyone know can i just change kb into surround, or do I need whole new top?

I'm guessing you can as their available, but anyone know for sure? And if so is it just glued in or do I need something special to re attach.

Hope someone can help

cheers

Its a total palmrest replacement.

If you look at the keyboards for sale you will see tiny holes in between many of the keys. These are where tiny plastic "rivets" would go through they keyboard from the top of the palm rest to the underside panel which holds it all together like a sandwich.

See my post for the NP-Q430 which is almost the same "Island" type keyboard.

If you look at the palm rests for sale for the RV511 you will see how the underside of the palm rest is "riveted" to the top of the palm rest.

View this one on ebay. Scroll way down to see the other side and how it is riveted in many places.

WORST.DESIGN.EVER.

WOW! Thanks very much NYJimbo, thats what I feared. although it looks far worse a job than I thought it would be. Seems like you did a lot of work here, appreciate that. Guess it wont hold itself in place correctly without all those rivets? Guess I'd better try source a complete top assemble and quote for that.
Thanks, great work on your post about it all.

Guess it wont hold itself in place correctly without all those rivets?

I had another tech I do work for try to do this on another Samsung and he brought me the machine after he tried to install just the keyboard. It was all flimsy and the keyboard bounced under palm rest. You have to do so much work getting all the remains of the rivets out and even if you make it perfectly clean there is no way to secure it properly. He tried hot glue and crazy glue in different areas and it was just a mess. I told him to just buy the whole palm rest used if the customer could live with that. I have had two more come in like this and as soon as I was sure it was the same assembly I told the customer they had to go for the whole palm rest or it could not be done.

There are a few that look like this but the keyboard pries out from the top and the keyboard is only riveted to the top surrounding trim but you can see that when you go looking for the replacement keyboard.

Any time you see one like this and all the replacement keyboards show those tiny holes between the keys, you know you are in trouble.
