Right to Repair-Apple Authorized are not allowed to repair iDevices

This is probably something a lot of us know already, but its interesting to hear it from the horses mouth. Share this around if you think people should know this, with the Right to Repair stuff coming up.


Basically, she calls up a couple AASPs, asks what they can do for several common issues suffered by iPhones and iPads. AASPs basically can only do iPhone screen replacements and battery replacements. Anything else, and ALL iPad stuff just gets sent out for an exchange for a refurbished device. Usually for more than a used replacement costs anywhere else, and for nearly 3-5 times more than independents can fix it for.

They're also seemingly clueless about the actual devices, thinking the headphone jack is soldered direct to the logic board, and not even knowing about the Multi-Touch Repair Program Apple offers for the "touch disease" epidemic the 6+ suffers.

As many of us know Apple has always been a major pain on repairs when it comes to OEM only parts. But I'm pretty certain that the Apple stores can only screens and batteries.
 
When I was working for an AASP (before any repairs were done to phones) the cost of an iPad replacement wasn't bad if you had a high end one, but the kicker is that the replacement price was the same for for the lowest end as the highest end for that model. Also you would have to make sure you found someone really good at working on iPads to get a comparable quality to receiving a replacement unit (I don't know if these were refurbs or not, but they looked brand new), plus they came with a 30 or 90 day warranty or something. I did do some iPad repairs with third-party parts, I don't know if it against the AASP agreement or not (and typically AASPs will use Apple as a scapegoat), but I stopped because it wasn't worth it for me time-wise. Now with phones, the quantity of same day repairs AASPs have to do is insane, if they had to do other repairs it would mean requiring more employees. I don't have anything against right to repair, but if Apple provides a nice safety net for AASPs and I don't think it makes sense to go outside of that if you are one.
