[REQUEST] Right screw driver for Macbook Air

Too hard to tell if it's a shallow hole or the bottom of a normal screw.

You do have the machine in front of you, I presume? It should be very apparent just looking, perhaps with a magnifier of some sort. If there's a security pin up the middle of the recess, it will come right to the top, flush with the top surface of the screw thread. You shouldn't have to hunt for it.

I no longer have the computer but I stared enough at it enough to state from your description that this does not have a security pin

Is the job still pending, or have you moved on?

iFixit – a reliable source, imo – says P5 for 'Macbook Air', no distinction between models. If your P5 didn't fit, you've either got an inaccurately finished driver or someone's tried to use the wrong driver on the screw and thrown up a burr. Those screws are pretty precise and it doesn't take much to push them out of shape.

If you're going to do Mac hardware work, I suggest ordering a set of tools from iFixit (as noted above) as Apple does not use just one screw size. You often need several different screwdriver tips for a single machine. I think my personal best was 5 different tips to replace the keyboard on a MacBook Pro.

I am also at the point where if someone brings me a Mac that needs hardware work, I go to Ifixit and review the procedure before agreeing to do the job. Had a very bad experience on a 27" iMac. Replaced the hard drive, but the display stopped working. Almost lost several hundred dollars on purchase of a new display. Fortunately, the customer had another (dead) iMac and I was able to use the display from that one.

iFixit are overpriced - the kit I have has everything required - even for all Apple devices.

Is that a pin in the middle of the pentlobe recess? And I'd check iFixit for proper tool specs.

I have the 65.00 kit from iFixIt and it includes that bit.
