Review this USB 2.0 to SATA Adapter

I use one of the apricorn ide/sata USB squares for on site work and for IDE drives in shop.
I use a drive toaster for SATA drives on the bench.
Currently I have a thermaltake BlacX.

Those thermaltake BlacX stations look good. It's nice that they also cool off the drive.

Back to my question... What are the disadvantages of a SATA to USB adpater versus a docking station?

They are the same thing in a different physical form (unless docking station has more than just USB - like eSata).

I used the Apricorn for years but just got tired of the cables when I had to use it on my bench.
As time went on and I dealt with less IDE drives I moved to a docking station.

For me the advantage was convenience. It just sits next to the machine I use for recoveries. I don't have to pull the adapter and cables out of the static bag I keep them in.
