Residential Signage

In a round about way, I may have been informed, from an online source not from the city, that a home based business should have some kind of signage that is viable for others to see.

Recently I just so happened to have noticed yet another PC repair tech in my area, because of a sign he posted. His house and proposed situated on such a way that his house sits back a ways off the road and the sign is right beside the road. It only went up recently, but it made me think.

A. I may have to see if I can make a friend.
B. I live in a more typical suburbanite neighborhood. Is there a type/style sign I could put up or hang that would be visible and not be something huge and gaudy?
C. Is having a sign in the yard something that some cities require or is it done more for advertising?

You need to check your local ordinances. Where I live, you have to pay for a license to run a business out of your home. Even though you PAID for your license, it explicitly states that NO signage of ANY kind is allowed. Not even a sign in your window. This is one of the reasons I have a shop. It's a clever way for cities to increase their tax revenue by discouraging home based businesses.

I know I'm a long way from Minnesota, but here we have different zones. Business and Residential.
Home based businesses are allowed in residential areas as long as strict rules are followed.
A business license is a prerequisite.
No noise before 8.00am or after 6.00pm. You must not leach chemicals into waterways or put anything down drains, cause pollution or toxic fumes and a whole bunch of other dont's. Even parking more than three cars at a time outside is illegal if they are doing business with you, yet 10 cars can park there if they are not!
You may not put any signage on the "verge." Thats the bit between the footpath and your fence.
You can have a sign on your boundary but it must be no larger than 50 cm x 70 cm. That's not much area to advertise to passing traffic.

I've told the local council to get *%$#@ed on more than one occasion!
On three occasions now they have threatened to fine me $500 per day for having an "A" frame on the verge outside my house.
I've been in my current location for 13 years now and I put my "A" frame out every day!
The sign on my boundary fence is about 1.2 meters x 1. 2 meters. It's been there 13 years and they haven't said a word about that one!
Whenever the council come stomping their feet and threatening to fine me for the A frame I ring my local Member of Parliament and plead my case.
I don't hear from the council again for a long time after that!
I guess one day I'll have to comply - but not now.

I put out a sign and then the town gave me a handy notice telling me all the restrictions on signs in my town.

I decided to not bother as nobody would be able to read it at the legal dimensions, even at a mere brisk walking pace.

That said, A lot of people around me put out big signs anyways. They just take 'em down for a few weeks after they get a notice and put 'em back up.

This cracks me up. Perhaps I should try the same approach. Funny thing is, I recently had a neighbor who worked for the city and I ended up getting g a nice little letter in the mail about the gravel on the side of my garage and down to the driveway.

Granted, I never liked how it looked, but I know it's been there since the house was built and a few other houses in my neighborhood also have gravel in the same area, albeit nicer looking.

I was so ****** and in the letter I received I had mentioned that if I am being "picked on" because of my neighbor, I expect her/the city to address the issue with the other houses in the neighborhood. They had a few questions on the letter such as "what will you do to resolve the issue?" "how will you accomplish your resolution" and "when do you plan to resolve it?" Respectively I answered "grow grass", "seed" and "eventually"... LOL I was not in the mood, even though I didn't tell them to get %$&@*ed
