Hi all.
I have a client's Dell Vostro 1700 laptop in for an LCD replacement for a cracked screen. The part number taken from the back of the panel is LP171WX2 (TL) (B1). It's a 17" WXGA+ screen. I ordered this one from ebay:

I just got the new one in today. The part number for the new one is B170PW06 v.2. and it looks different. The old one had these two brackets on the top and the new one doesn't have them. That's not what really concerns me, though. The problem is when I connected the new one to the laptop. I removed the inverter from the old panel and moved it to the new one, connected all cables and powered it on. The image, in the BIOS, takes up the entire width of the screen, but only half the height, in the middle. I couldn't find any settings in the BIOS to change any video options. This machine seems to have a dedicated Nvidia video card.
If I let it try to boot to Windows (XP), it starts the XP splash screen but then blanks out and just starts beeping one beep every few seconds, so it seems that it doesn't like this new screen.
I tried Parted Magic and Linux Mint. It boots fine but only shows the right half of the desktop... on the left half of the screen!
I reattached the old screen to check if I messed up any cables when doing the switch, but it works fine as before (except for the cracked part, of course).
The resolution for both screens, when I checked online, seems to be identical. Is the screen defective, not compatible, or am I missing something?
I attached pictures of the old screen and of the new one showing it only using half the screen height, and of Parted Magic taking up the left part of the screen.

When ordering stuff from eBay, especially OEM replacement parts, you need to be careful as they will sub stuff out with no notice. Screens are one of those items that really should match OEM part numbers from what I have seen. Another thing I prefer to do is plug the serial number in to get the BOM of OEM part numbers and use that as a double check.

Based on the pictures I'm seeing the new screen may be defective or, more likely, not compatible.

Where can I find the part numbers for this Vostro 1700. I couldn't find it in the service manual.

I would say it is not the correct part number. According to your post the part numbers are different, and you said they were physically different. In your case you should email/call the seller to confirm it will work.

I thought so and initiated a return. Let's see how it goes.

Have previously worked at a dealer for spareparts and if someone ordered a Dell replacement screen we have the appropriate firmware flashed.

It is important for Dell laptops to get a screen with the correct DP / N number. This Dell parts number is stored in each original Dell replacement screen in the firmware.
