remote support scammers

Really funny. But really terrible too. I had an elderly client a month or two ago who was a victim of this scam. In addition to infecting his pc, they would call him at 2 or 3am nightly trying to extort money. I believe he had to change his home number in the end.

Ye I've come across those as well.. amazes me how some people fall for it so easily though. It's like a total stranger knocks on the door and says "give me the key to your house and I will fix some stuff you didn't know you had." and they are all like "Sure thing, here ya go! Anything else I can give you, kind stranger?"

Had one yesterday while I was on a call fixing a problem. The owner passed it to me and the person on the other end of the phone was quite aggressive. I asked for their phone number etc to check them out and he demanded to know my Microsoft id and other details. I hung up and checked on the number he gave me was a dud one. This lady had several calls over a few days and did pay them some money. I had one phone me my business line today as well.

I read through that entire session and found it to be quite entertaining as well. Unfortunately I've had some clients who have been scammed who didn't know any better and went ahead and paid for the stuff they didn't need.

We just need to better educate all of our family members, friends and clients about this "crap" and hope that someday the scammers will get the message. But as long as M$ has a death-grip on the O/S market the scam artists will continue to look for another sucker to prey upon.

Perhaps we should start installing VM's inside the O/S's - nah...

Had one call me last night after dinner...messed with him as I watched TV...never gets old

LOL! it has become a hobby to some of us. When one of them called my business line the other day, I was working on a issue computer issue at the time and I wasn't in the best of moods. He got loud with me and I let him have it. Needless to say I told him to delete my number and never try this tactic with me ever again. lol.

Have had quite a few elderly customers having paid up with these - 'scammers' - to put it nicely. It's really annoying seeing decent people being scammed like this so I put a warning in a local newspaper about it.

Had a whale of a time though when one of them called my business line - research #1 fail. I had him believing that I was taking everything in and when I told him that he had actually called an IT support company, he kept up with his script!

Eventually it took the "look, you're talking to someone who knows exactly what you are so just 'go forth and multiply' off and don't call me again" before I put the phone down.

Apparently I'm off their calling list as I haven't been called again since. :D
