Does anybody know a good way to recover email passwords from Outlook Express? Free if possible. I do my PC stuff on the side and don't have a lot of extra money to spend on software.

I've got a customer who needs their password recovered to set up an option on their network printer.

Thanks
Dave

You should not have to do anything in outlook express regarding the printer.

Are you talking about the POP password?

I know it's weird. It a big office fax, scanner printer thing. From what I've been able to gather, it will route incoming faxes to a folder on your desktop. Then you only have to print the pages you need. They had it set up, but then their router crashed and that screwed it all up, not sure why, but it did. So now I need to set it up again, but they don't want to pay the printer support guy again, cause it's like 300.00 for him to come out, I'm much cheaper. :)

You didn't answer VDub about what passwords you were trying to recover. If it's the POP (email) passwords you could run Wireshark on the machine and sniff the packets as it logs into mail. They normally aren't encrypted (but they might be).

Is the network using static IP's? or dose it transmit by host name? If it is you need to make sure that you configure the router to use the same network. For instance if the router is set up for 192.168.0.x and the printer is sending stuff to 192.168.1.x then it will not work. Just look at the IP of the workstation that receives the fax's and make sure that the router uses the same network if its not then change it in the router. This should not involve changing any passwords or credentials in outlook.

Almost all POP3 and SMTP passwords are encrypted now a days. I was going to suggest calling the ISP and having the password reset but I don't think that's necessary. I still don't know what password would be relevant in this case. Maybe the router password, or of the admin panel on the printer has a password.

MailPassView. You may find anti-virus software returns a false-positive with this, but it's totally safe to use. I've used it for years and carry a copy with my toolkit.

I second iptech. Mail PassView displays pop3 passwords for both Outlook Express and Outlook. Just be sure to disable any real-time virus scanning before you run it.

I made a tool to recover outlook express passwords
I usually sell it on my site for $2.99
