Record screen at startup

Does anybody know of a program that will allow me to start recording a computer screen as soon as it boots up? I want to make a video of a computer booting up before and after a tune-up.

I have a program round here somewhere that calculates the time from u sign into windows; till the time that everythin is loaded on the desktop ..

The only way I would think that this would work would be VMWare or Blochs (sp?) (a Virtual Machine) with WINK.. That way you could run the record mode in the background.

Yes, you would have to use some sort of virtual PC since you can't record while the PC is going through lets say POST.

If you have a (for dell server not sure for PC's) DRAC it would allow you to see a PC booting up anything you would see on the sceen you would see if you connet to the DRAC. The DRAC is an expensive network card that it has it OWN IP you connect to it and it connects to the PC it is install in. HMMM I wonder if there is something like that for a PC. The DRACs are for servers.

Thanks. I'm actually looking to record just after windows logs in though, but still haven't found anything. I think kdyer's suggestion is great, but in this case I'm benchmarking before and after a hard drive replacement so that won't really work.

I can't remember the name of a tool that a buddy used. I think its called camtasia and he just selected the virutal screen to record.

Now that I have a better idea on what you want to do you might want to contact Bryce. If you noticed he has a video POD section on fixes. I am pretty sure he can tell you the tools he used.

What about RDP? Or maybe a KVM? Either one of those might be a better way to record a screen at login,

Fraps might be worth a look - Linky. There should be someway to make a batch script to automatically start a recording at startup.

Do you really want to install or run some program that will essentially be another program draining resources and occupying HDD/CPU time during startup or your labor time for that matter? And do you really want to show the difference as a plain boring logon screen VS your physical hand hitting the power button? and watching the enitre laptop or PC start. Lights flashing, Recording the boot beeps and other familiar noises. You voice narrating?

I think you have a brilliant idea actually If your clients are like my friends they always say "Im not sure much is different" (when you know it boots up 1-5 mins faster)

Get a webcam and record live. Doing it live, you can even have a race. A video of the old system and the actual system in question. you hit play they hit power and watch the difference side by side.

How about Keeping it Simple?

Webcam and spare laptop aiming at the screen in question. There has been HUGE improvements in webcam capture technology.

Another option would be to create a startup script in the local computer policy. You can launch a batch file that then launches a screen recording program. That would be recording by the time the login prompt appears.

When we are doing tuneups we use a watch and record the time before we do anything and then after we are done tuning it up we reboot and record the time to boot afterworlds. Then we write both times on the invoice.
