Realistic Expectations

Sometimes I think people just don't think to clearly...So I have to hire all these guys for this new govt contract. Obviously based on their experience/school/certs etc there are some positions they are better qualified for than others.

So I will typically ask "what kind of salary requirement do you have".....This one guy replied and said:

"Well I am expecting anything over six figures...but will take between $50k-$60K.."

Now how do you go expecting over 6 figures then drop that by half? Plus, work experience he has if stretched about 2 years on a help desk....

Now I fully understand having goals, etc...But, you gotta be a bit realistic on your thought process...

That's very nice of him. He expected you would offer him over 100 000, but was letting you know he would take 50-60. Or maybe he doesn't actually know was six figures means. : P

Your right..I did not think of it that way..I guess maybe he just was being nice to me ;)

Had an interviewer once ask me that question, I responded with "I'd like a high number to the left, and about 8 zeros to the right..", he chuckled and said "how many of those zeros are to the right of the decimal??" I responded with "I'll leave that to you". He hired me, for whatever reason, and on my first check (as we were paid monthly) that he hand delivered, it was for $5,100.0000000. I got a big laugh out of it as did he.

I wonder if that was the case and the guy is such a straight man that cmonova missed the humor. Sometime interview nerves can let you say silly things.

I wish that was the case the guy was 100% serious..And when he said he would take 50-60K that was even amusing to me based on his experience...He was very sure of himself (which is a good thing) ;)

Crazier today had a guy I called. I said "So I was told you received the contingent offer letter" he said yes and we talked some. I realized there was a problem when I asked him how much it said it was for and he said $65K...I said hmmm that is not possible it should be 55K for that location (we staff multiple locations)...now he was actually ok with it. Then I heard his wife, apparently she could hear me talking to him. She was going on about that is a 10K difference, yada yada yada..Finally I told him...Hey, tell your wife I will pay you the 65K but you will have to work at that location vice the one you want. I don't care either way but location A is a 20 minute ride to work and location B is at least 1 hour each way...You make the decision...He agreed 10K is not worth the ride..haha
