re: workshop broken into - Emergency Recovery Fund idea

Hi everybody!
I can't even dare to think how I would feel if something like what happened to CadishedComputers will happen to me. It's too painful.
I know I have posted in this forum my unorthodox views about charities, and I stand by my statements.
But what I want to talk about now is something different.
I was thinking that many of us had good and bad times.
In the good times, some of us feel generous.
They go to their preferred charity and donate, or they go on the street and drop a nickel or two to the first beggar they encounter.
And it makes you feel good, that you shared some of your good times with those less fortunate.

What if our Bryce here was to create an "Emergency Recovery Fund", a bank account where we, the members of this forum, when have good times and feel generous, could donate a nickel or two.
I've been member of this forum for quite a while now, and in a few years CadishedComputers is the first one I read about having his shop broken into.
Imagine, if things like this don't happen too often to the members of this forum, then there is a chance that quite a few dollars will accumulate in such a fund.
In my opinion, such an event is something that any of us could have happening to them.
I know it would be extra work and responsibility for Bryce, but is just an idea.

What do you guys/girls think?

I don't think it's necessary. Things like that are what insurance is for. Not only that, who would want to be the one to decide when someone gets a helping hand? I doubt anyone.

Insurance claims can take months to be paid.
A 1000 dollars may help you put together few builds for the customers who are not happy with what happened as a temporary replacement for their computers.

Take this aspect for example:
Residential customers, because businesses are insured anyway.
The 3 or 4 customers are very angry at the prospect of not being able to use a computer and get online for 30 or 60 days until your insurance pays your claim.
One customer, may even take legal action against you.
What if your insurance company (as they always do) find glitches in your claim and pay you a small percentage of your claim?

I think there are just too many problems with the idea to make it actually work. I could list several, but I don't feel like it.

I mean, I'm not faulting you for wanting to help, I just don't think the idea is sound.

I don't think it would work. It would be open to abuse and to be honest, why should I give money to a business owner I don't know, possibly in a different part of the world? You pay insurance and hope things work out. If I can help an individual I feel an affinity for then I'll offer to help them.

Referring back to your previously posted views on charity....you're up for paying money to help business owners who pay insurance to cover these things, but anyone who needs more help looking after their terminally child than the state offers can go whistle? I don't get it.

If insurers don't pay up then it's a legal matter. You can get legal insurance to cover that if it's important to you.

We all feel for people going through hard business times but I don't think this is the way forward.

Already beat you to it, already donated half the cost of the Technet subscription to Cadishead because he had all his CD's stolen and doesnt have enough to get them replaced via a Technet Subscription. I know that insurance will eventually pay him whatever hes lost, but I want the guy to stay afloat until then.

If anyone else wants to make up the rest of the cost of a Technet subscription so he can replace his CD's, PM him for his Paypal addy.
Id setup a fund but it would be double fees in you getting it to me, then me getting it to Cadishead. Its better for the money to go straight to Cadishead to minimize the fees since its better in his pocket than Paypals.

If you make a donation like that from paypal to paypal make sure when you send it you mark it as personal and then a gift. If you do it like this you should not have to pay a fee.

I have been thinking hard and long about accepting the offer(s) made. Part of me, thinks I cannot accept it, due to my pride, and part of me thinks, yes I should accept it, with the grace it is meant for.

If its agreeable, with Bryce, and everyone else, I will accept the offer, on one condition.

That being, once I am back on my feet again, I reimburse each and everyone of you, who donates to this cause. Obviously with the added expense I am having to do now, I cannot repay it straight away, but in a couple of months, I will repay it gladly, with an added 10%. This added 10% please donate to a worthy charity of your cause.

The comments made on both threads, have made me cry numerous times today. It is at times like this, when people are down, that the common community rally round, and offer, help.

From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely thank each and every one involved.

Generally speaking it is called EMPATHY.
To me is much easier to empathise with someone who is in the same shoes as I am.
Having a terminally ill relative is sad, hard to deal with but that doesn't cut it with me. sorry....
There are charities for cancer, etc etc....
But you know what happens with those money?
Research projects are being financed, then if a cure is found, it all becomes business, patents, etc, etc.
People like the team who discovered penicillin (not bloody mr felming) are a dying breed.
If a cure for cancer will be found, that would mean lots and lots of money.. blah blah..... if it sounds like you care for someone else, then is ok to make some money while you "show you care".
One day you will eventually wake up to the real ugly world we live in.
