Quick question about iTunes

A customer has a Windows laptop, an iPad and an iPod. She uses iTunes on the laptop to manage her music and then syncs the pad and pod to that.

Unfortunately, she said that something has happened and she has 'lost' all her music from the laptop. When she opens up iTunes on the laptop there are no playlists or songs listed within it anywhere.

Now, I've never used iTunes or any iDevice at all. I can't be doing with Apple's restrictive practices and refuse to own anything that 'iHas iAn iSilly iName' so I have no idea what could be wrong or how to fix it. My question though, is, can the songs be put back on the laptop by syncing from pad/pod to laptop instead of the other way round, and if so, how?

TIA

Is iTunes on the laptop linked to her Apple iTunes account? That will make everything disappear. She really should be cloud syncing devices through her account rather than using the app.

Most versions of iTunes require you to re login after an update. There was one update that destroyed the library. I forget which one exactly, but from what I remember the files were still on the computer.

I'm not sure Mark, but it's something to ask her so thanks very much for that pointer :)

Your welcome. Forgot to mention there are apps which can scan iDevice backups to extract things. Most of what I have used are for OS X but one time I did one for M$ OS's. Worked great. But there is a difference in music. Items from the iTunes store are always available once synced to the account. Items from CD's are different and more difficult. Last time I looked at it the songs were not marked with the original names so it may be more difficult.

If you need to / if it comes to that, I invested in this software a few years ago and it's proven invaluable.

It allows you to extract pretty much any & all data from either an iDevice or an iDevice iTunes backup:
