So first blatant thing: I DO NOT KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT SEO.... Like a normal human... :P

I wasn't sure if going around on websites for local communities and posting my website link, and general info in forums will help with SEO if people click on it?

SEO has changed so much that back links are not anywhere near as helpful any more.

SEO is a crap-shoot. Even if you spent a boatload of money and time and got ranked today, it could all be gone tomorrow with a single Google algorithm change (they make HUNDREDS of algorithm changes every year!). In the end you're giving up all control of your traffic source to Google, and you're becoming dependent on Google for your livelihood. NOT a smart move in my opinion.

You'd be better off spending your advertising budget on Adwords. At least then you could have a MEASURABLE and GUARANTEED traffic source that is 100% guaranteed to be there tomorrow.

We spent tens of thousands of dollars on SEO. We got ranked #1-#3 for ALL major keywords. It was great for about 5 months. Then it all went to crap. Google changed their algorithm and totally screwed us. We still rank, but are more like #7-#15, and we all know that 90% of people click on link #1, 2, or 3. Almost no one scrolls down to further results, and going to the second page is almost unheard of. Our traffic plummeted over 98% OVERNIGHT.

As for spammy backlink BS, don't do it. It's more likely to get your site penalized by Google so there is ZERO chance of you ever ranking for anything, not even your own business name! Talk about the shame of all shames. People Google your business name and your competitors come up. NOT GOOD.

I'm mostly out of the seo game but local seo requires research into the competition. The larger the city you are in the more chances of serious seo competition. If local competition isnt putting forth any effort in building up their seo then what sapphirescales said is more than likely incorrect for your particular situation. If there is a lot of competition then it will take serious effort to rank up and an algorithm change can change your positioning fairly easily.

If he's living in the middle of bumfunk with no competition, then just having the words "computer repair" and "city name" in his site title and body should rank him somewhat. With little to no competition, you CAN rank with on-page SEO exclusively. But unless you're living in a small town with a population under 5,000, I wouldn't count on it.

I use SemRush to research competing companies and you csn find out alot of good info like keywords and where you rank ect.
Also analyses your pages and offers advice on improving it.

I also use whitespark citation finder which can tell you where to list your business online. You put in competitors name or phone number and it analyses google search results to see where they are listed

Lastly simply create good content on your page by having a good blog. Share the blog links on social media on multiple platforms and your will start to pickup traffic.

Lastly do some videos of who you are what you do or topics..youtube is second biggest search engine and people love seeing things in videos as apposed to reading.

I tried AdWords a few times, but I felt like the numbers didn't add up. So when I got one of those $100 credit offers I created a new page and did my AdWords campaign for it. The clicks AdWords said I got was almost 50% more than what my site host said the paige got. I never used it again.

Yeah never been a fan of Adwords. I tried Facebook and got a few nibbles but been reading up on marketing and every person ive read on this topic say Facebook is best but im yet to see that yet. I really think it comes down to how much $$$ you invest into it the more your rewarded

Im working on creating a free report on a specific topic and in order to get the report the visitor needs to sign up to newsletter

You have to spend money to make money. We have an over 500% ROI with Adwords. If we spend $1,000 in advertising, we get $5,000 in profit. But you can blow a LOT of money with Adwords if you don't know what you're doing. Hire an Adwords expert if you don't know what you're doing. They're well worth the 20% they charge. Thankfully I was an Internet Marketer for a time so I'm already an Adwords expert, but if I wasn't you bet your behind I'd be hiring one.

Targeted traffic is key. It's better to have 20 people come to your site and get 5 phone calls, then to have 500 people come to your website and get 2 phone calls. Our average cost per customer acquisition is around $15. Not too shabby if you ask me. If you could pay $15 per targeted customer that walked through your door, I'm sure you'd take as many as you could. That's what Adwords provides if you know what you're doing.

I understand you have to spend money to make money. My problem with AdWords is the click numbers never matched up. Especially with my test ad. I understand there can be a percentage off in the numbers, but close to 50% makes me raise an eyebrow.

Now if I was targeting residential I would probably still use it. My target is home office / small office up to 25 users. Not a set in stone number, but around that. My USPS marketing does really well for me in my area for that.

Because of only one other business in my smaller town I have managed to make the first page of a Google search using computer service/repair/upgrade and my town's name.

I've never posted links on other websites though.
