Police siren

Hi guys,
Got a desktop in a few days ago and haven't been able to solve this one. Basically , the sound of a police siren comes on every 10-15 mins and stays on for about 15 seconds. I've tried a few scan and running them in safe mode but it still persist. Anyone seen this before? I should add as well that system seem to work fine.

It is most likely a warning alarm coming from the motherboard. The computer is possibly overheating, the fans are not spinning or they not connect right (making the motherboard think they have failed).
Check fans and heatsinks for dust and make sure the fans are actually spinning. Possibly re-apply the thermal paste on the CPU.

All the above checked and still this sound persist. Definitely not over heating. This person seem to do quite a bit of torrenting so I'm leaning towards a virus or some other nasties.

Eliminate something OS related by running a Live CD for a while

+1

Stolen device tracking software can do this as well, specifically preyproject.com. If installed, one of the options is to play an alarm (which sounds just like a siren) at a specified interval once the device is marked as stolen. It's primarily for mobile devices, but there's no reason it wouldn't work on a desktop as well.

It the sound actually coming from the system beeper, or is it an audio file playing on the speakers?

I seem to remember something someone once told me.....

While a Linux Live CD is a great way to narrow down certain issues, Linux is not a diagnostics tool in it self......Things that are good to test in a Linux environment: network, sound, video, ports, DVD drive, etc.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

I've heard a siren sound lately.. I want to say it was a virus alarm from avast or something.. maybe your system tray icons aren't showing up correctly for notifications?
