hey everyone. I am wanting to set up a personal server for my business that way when I am not with all my files, I can still access them from another machine. I don't know a lot about servers and setups but after reading and searching around it seems that VPN would work for me. The main problem I come into is having an address to connect to my server machine remotely when I want. Is there anyway to do this or is the VPN just going to be good over a network? Thanks...any ebooks or websites that may help would be totally appreciated as well!

Sign up for a dynamic DNS service like dyndns.com . It downloads a program to your computer that updates their servers with your current IP address. Then your given a url that you would use, that then forwards to the current IP address. Then you could either just set up an FTP server, or set up a normal VPN as usual using the url to connect to your server.

Oh, some routers have a section in the setup that allows you to enter your name and password for dyndns. That way you won't need the program, so check your router to see.

I use freedns.affraid.org and set my Ubuntu server to automatically update the IP address every minute. Only one time have I caught my system down for a minute. Very easy to set up, and has been working great for a couple of years now. I just use affraid.org as my DNS servers, and all is good.
